OMG ANOTHER QUESTION ABOUT FILM SCHOOLS TO APPLY TO. YOUD THINK I'D GET THE IDEA BY NOW!
Ok, next year im applying to film school, so now i gotta get a good list going. I have a 3.6 and rising gpa. 4 honors classes and 1 AP class. I do 3 varsity sports, i founded a "film club" at my school, member of amnesty international, head of amnesty film festival, and have a job at the local TV station. I was nominated for the NJ Governors school (a special academic school for gifted kids, i was nominated for film). I have one really decient film, but in the upcomming months im working on a better one.

Do u think i have a good list that corresponds to what all that says above. (note: starred schools im just applying to for the hell of it, maybe ill get lucky). It is in the rank of most important to saftey schools.

NYU*
USC*
UCLA
FSU
SCAD
Emerson
SVA
NCSA
Wisconsin

Is there one that im missing, do u think my order is messed up? Are there any ones that u would add corresponding to my gpa, sat, whatnot.

OK OK, I SWEAR THIS IS THE LAST POST ILL MAKE ABOUT FILMS SCHOOLS. if you reply than ull never hear from me again on this topic!

i think that fsu only accepts 15 freshmen a year to their film program... i mean, you might as well aply, i did, but its a reach thats for sure.

if youre looking for a witty signature, youre looking in the wrong place.

Here's my personally bias film school
wish list:

1) USC - I've seen the most quality work from here at all film festivals I go to and amongst other places.
2) UCLA - Iv'e seen good work from here. cheaper $ than USC.
3) NYU - Supposedly the USC competitor but I dont live around New York to hear more about it.
4) FSU - I'm hearing more good things about this school.
5) Art center college of Desing in pasadena CA - Most likely where I'll end up. Not the best and not the worst but I hear more good than bad things about it.

I wish I had the grades UCLA. The fact that they only accept 15 people into their film school makes me not want to apply. I'm so stupid.

Dont forget about University of Texas, their film school leapfrogged nyu, ucla, and usc this year because they implemented a new program to produce 3 1 million dollar indepent films a year to give their film students hands on experience in film making. Also the film community in austin is exploding with many student film festivals, dont forget Robert Rodrigues graduated from UT's film school and he constantly does seminars and q and a's with the students.

how come almsot all the schools mentioned are always state sponsered university programs? i barely ever see technical film schools or private film schools.

U should not have problems to get into NYu with decent SAT's and a good portfolio:)

and just because I am an NYu fanboy, some pluses for the school.

NYU is in manhattan, greenwhich vollage:) screw austin texas, NYC is the place to be, believe me;)

Robert rodriguez? we have ang lee, martin scorsese, oliver stone, spike lee, jim jarmusch, joel Coen (or was it ethan) and many more;)

We have incredible screenwriting teachers and film teachers. You think a robert rodriguez teaches you something? take a class with Karl Bardosh or Arnold Baskin;)

You have a chance to work on a 16mm film every weekend if you desire to do so. almost 1000 filmstudents go to school here--->endless working possibilities. Not enough? try an internship with miramax, new line cinema, MTV etc. Not enough? Take a 6 week intensive course in 35mm film making in one of the best and oldest films schools: PRague (awesome zity btw.)...wait, you can go to florence, russia, cuba, china and many more places to chill and learn about film making while you are at NYU.

besides that, in your sophomore year, you will make 5 multiple camera studio productions, work on over 40 others. You will also make 5 16mm b&w films and work on 20 others. In your junior year, you will direct a 16mm color sync sound short (or super 16, or 35mm, your decision) and work on many others. In your senior year, you can choose between a 30 min short or a 15 min short class where 50% of the student body does a thesis film. compared to USC, a loooooot of films you will do.

Did I mention that manhattan kicks LA's ass?

oh wait...mary kate and ashley will be here as well...they are way cuter than robert rodriguez and the N1 reason why to go to NYU:)

but I really like USC as well

NYU
USC
Columbia/UCLA/FSU
austin

:)

ah Did I mention that NYU regularly wins student academy awards and goes with a big team to Sundance and cannes?

another thing. Unlike USC and other schools, NYU accepts a LOT of students (250 a year?). Many of them suck. However, many others are extremely talented. You will only survive here if you work REALLY (REALLY!!!) hard...

so enough sucking up to my beloved school:) But seriously, I was one year at a small film school with total 'freedom"...and I was one year at NYU now....I loved both schools...but NYu was my best decision in my life and I have every single day such a blast in this city.

In my humble opinion:

Austin is a great town and I've heard amazing things about the UT film school. It's also a huge center of artistic activity in TX.

NYC's reputation speaks for itself on being a cultural center and from what I've heard it's probably the best film school.

It depends mainly on what YOU want from a film school. And you have to think about money too. UT is very affordable and Austin is as well.

NYC is very expensive! 15,000 a semester I believe + very high living expenses.

good point. With housing, do not even think to survive without 45000 dollar:(

but there is always financial aid

its all on the homepage

50% is SAT/grades/essay
50% is portfolio

it is competitive, but I believe the acceptance is around 23%

Wisconsin????
NO, I live here and i am going to Savanah College of art and design because there is absolutley nothing in WI. Nothing.

You're beautiful, just touch it.

if your trying to get into UCLA, I think you'll need a better GPA as it is my understannding that because it is so competitive, the average GPA is upp in the 4.1 - 4.3's

USC is a little more forgiving to academics if you have a killer portfolio and extra-curricular background.

"This is your life, and it's ending one minute at a time"

A good idea is to goo to a small liberal arts college, get rid of most gen ed classes and then transfer over to one of the big film schools after one year.

I applied to UT Austin, but I'm not so sure that I'll get in since I've got so-so stats and this is supposed to be their strictest year ever on admissions. The University of North Texas is my safety, but I don't really want to go there. Here are the other places I'm applying to...

School of Visual Arts
Cal State Northridge
Cal State Fullerton
Columbia College - Chicago
OU
And if all these schools reject me then I might go to Full Sail, but I want to look into it more.

Good luck Alex C
