Hello. I am currently an undergrad student in an interior architecture program. I am interested in pursing a masters in production design, and I would like to know how I can adjust my portfolio to better align with the program.

Since my undergraduate work is more focused on interior spaces than on film, I was hoping to get advice on how I could strengthen or adapt my portfolio to better align with what the administration is looking for. Are there any types of projects or skills I should develop or emphasize?

I would greatly appreciate any guidance or resources.

Hello! I got my undergraduate degree in Interior Architecture as well, and just finishing my master's in Production Design at AFI.

I actually think you have an advantage coming from an interior architecture background. I would focus on your process behind designing interior spaces and show how you can tell stories through those environments, creating a narrative with each project.

A lot of students come from architecture, and many of the classic Hollywood production designers did too before moving into film. Concept is everything, just like it is in design school. If your portfolio clearly demonstrates strong conceptual thinking, you'll be in a great position.

They also love seeing hand drawings, sketches, renderings, and drafting. Those really help show your design process and that you understand theme, visual storytelling, and how every design choice supports the narrative.

I even made a mini two minute video on my thesis space I did on Canva.
