Just wondering if anyone else was applying? I just emailed off my documents and I'm already sooo nervous! I applied for Production. Anyone else or am I a lone wolf here?

I'm from Texas and thought about applying to their program but changed my mind when I saw that they require the GRE. I was shocked especially since most school don't require the GRE (or only do if you have a GPA below a 3.0).

I'm not going to lie, even though I have a solid GPA, my GRE scores aren't going to impress anyone. What I was told by a former professor was that a lot of schools just use them for scholarship purposes, as well as to compare students between programs (MFA vs MBA, and such).
The GRE will get you. For example (rant coming), Savannah School of Arts requires you to have a 500 on the verbal section to prove you can "properly use the English language." You can't tell that from my statement of purpose or written materials? I understand it's a good way to weed people out, and it's all my fault I bombed the GRE, but come on!

I'm anti testing. I'm a firm believer that some people aren't good test takers and that it really has no baring on how successful you will be in graduate school. But hey...thats just my two cents.

I had my GRE Test yesterday (with no preparation). Verbal: 320; Quan: 700.

My portfolio is not the best, but I have some decent portfolio which runs for 3-4 minutes.

What is my chance of getting into UTA for MFA in Film and Media Production? Is my GRE Score too low or is it ok to apply for the program with this GRE Score?

If my chances are low, I would spent my time applying for other film schools which don't require any GRE.

Buying one of $30 GRE prep books can help increase your score greatly. The verbal section especially is kind counter-intuitive which can be worked around with preparation.

The books definitely help! I read three different ones and took a few practice tests. I went to the library and checked out as many as I could. A few were a year or two old, but they didn't seem outdated at all.

But the GRE is not like the SAT where they take your best scores. I'm pretty sure that all your scores show up for schools to see, which stinks.

For UT'S application they say submit a max of 20 mins for your portfolio. Does anyone think 4 mins is enough? I made a video I am quite proud of but is only 4 mins, I have other work I can submit but is not as good. Thoughts??

If you're uncertain, you should call. When I called about our academic writing sample, I was told that it was perfectly fine to have something under 10 pages. I would just make sure 4 minutes is fine.

SimAlex, what is your day like? (How many hours of class, how many hours devoted to primary/secondary concentration?) And what's your secondary concentration? I chose playwriting.

When were you notified of your acceptance?

I'd really love to get in there. Just a long, looong wait right now.

hey TS, best of luck with the application!! i was notified on the 24th of February, but that could definitely change, so don't let that freak you out. you take 3 classes a semester (9 hrs) and you spend a lot of time outside of class reading and writing. a LOT of time. i am learning how not to procrastinate, i'll put it that way, lol.

right now, i have a class monday night, and two writing workshops back to back thursday. in between, i'm reading my classmates' work and responding to it, and doing my own stuff. the two writing workshops are amazing so far... really diving right in and getting to it. i actually finished a script over winter break and am now revising it in one workshop, and the other is a class in TV writing.

as far as my secondary thing, i actually haven't decided that yet -- are you applying to the michener center, or to the Radio, Television & Film school?

I applied film production and got the email this morning -- I'M IN!

The email said they're going to be calling people in the next couple days, as well.

Wow! I was going to apply to UT Austin but kept emailing the Admissions office in November about special application details and never heard back so I decided to pull out. Wish I would've read SimAlex's thoughts way back in November. I would've gone through with it then. Oh well. Congrats Britta and others! That's great. This is still so early though, so many others who applied to other places...keep in mind, March is the month that things really go wild. So slow down and don't burn out on here too fast. Haha.
