NYU Tisch PhD in Cinema Studies (Fall 2025) – Anyone Else Applied?

Hi everyone!

I recently applied to the PhD program in Cinema Studies at NYU Tisch (Martin Scorsese Department of Cinema Studies), and now I’m in the anxious waiting period until decisions come out. I was wondering if anyone else here applied for Fall 2025?

It would be great to connect and share experiences—whether it’s discussing our research interests, thoughts on the application process, or just supporting each other during this nerve-wracking time.

If you applied, feel free to drop a comment! Let’s get through this wait together.

Hi! I did not apply but have a friend who is a PHD for Spanish - Portuguese at NYU. Hmu if you wanna talk with him or in general just to chat!
Thank you so much for your kind message! I would love to connect with your friend in the Spanish-Portuguese PhD program at NYU and also chat with you about our shared interests. I'll send you a direct message! 🙏

Hey! Good luck with your application. I applied for the Graduate Film, not the Cinema Studies - but still in the same shoes... waiting, anxiously.
Hi midnightcowboy,

Thank you so much for your kind words, and best of luck with your application to the Graduate Film program! I completely understand how nerve-wracking this waiting period can be—it’s great to know someone else is going through the same thing.

If you ever feel like you need someone to chat with during this time, don’t hesitate to reach out to me via direct message. We can get through this together! Wishing you all the best with your journey—fingers crossed for good news for both of us! 😊

Hi floppyhat, Also applied to this programme. Will let you know when I hear anything
Hi Michèle!

That’s great to hear—you’re not alone in this! It’s both exciting and nerve-wracking, but knowing that others are going through the same thing definitely helps. Thanks for letting me know, and I’ll do the same if I hear anything!

Wishing you the best of luck! Hopefully, we’ll get to connect as future colleagues at Tisch. 🤞🏼✨

Hey Haoran,

Thanks for sharing! I applied to the PhD in Cinema Studies, so we’re in slightly different programs, but I totally understand the anticipation! Wishing you all the best with MIAP—it’s such a crucial field. Let’s keep each other updated if we hear anything!

Hey, thanks for starting the thread!

I also applied to the same program. I work on Indian film! Applied to multiple schools but only received rejections so far :( Haven't heard anything from NYU, hope to hear soon. All the best!

嗨浩然,

谢谢分享!我申请的是电影研究博士学位,所以我们的课程略有不同,但我完全理解你的期待!祝你在 MIAP 一切顺利——这是一个至关重要的领域。如果我们有任何消息,请随时告知彼此!
I had send email to NYU MIAP team in Yesterday, they called me the consequence will open in the end of March! Cinema studies is based on common community! So I think this message is helpful for you, Even if major has a little bit difference. Look forward to your newest information.

Today might be the day, guys! The silence has been deafening, but maybe this is just the calm before the storm. Wishing all of you the best of luck—may we all survive this nerve-wracking wait together! 🚀🔥If anyone hears anything, please update us! We’re in this together!

Update: I just saw a post on GradCafe from someone saying they were accepted into the NYU Tisch Cinema Studies PhD program. The post states that the decision was received on March 20, which is a bit confusing since that date hasn’t happened yet.

Has anyone here received any updates or heard anything from the department? If anyone has more info, it would be great to clarify where things stand.

Hope everyone is doing okay—this wait has been exhausting.

Got an update yesterday and was rejected . I hope y'all get in . All the best !!!!
Bummer. :( Did you apply elsewhere as well?

Don't forget to log your application.

For those who applied to the NYU Tisch PhD in Cinema Studies, especially if you were successful, looking back, any tips or recs on how to write the SOP? I will be applying this year for the 2026 academic year. Thanks!
