Hi all — I'll be applying to several PhD Film Studies programs, including Tisch, NYU (Cinema Studies), Yale (Film and Media Studies & Comparative Literature), Cambridge (Film and Screen Studies), UCL (Film Studies), and possibly the University of Toronto (Film Studies).

I'm wondering if anyone can give feedback specifically on the PhD Cinema Studies at Tisch, NYU SOP. Tips, recs? If you applied in the recent past and were successful, what would you have wanted to know sooner so that your application would have been stronger? Any tips for the SOP? Thanks!

Tisch usually looks for a very clear research direction and how your interests match their faculty, so make that the center of your SOP. Focus on why your project matters and show you understand their program structure. Recent applicants often say they wished they had been more specific about their research plan and the professors they hoped to work with. Keeping the SOP focused and academically grounded can really strengthen your application.
