Independent filmmaker who started in LA and now shooting in NC

Hey everyone! Kyler Boudreau here. Attended film school in LA. Double major in editing and sound. Reason? Knew there were no directing jobs waiting after graduation. Editorial PA on studio, then editor on indie features. Cut a few films. Moved to writing and finally directing. A long road, but doing what I love! We're wrapping post on a 19th century film shot in the mountains. Have a feature in development and launching an online film school this summer called Write & Direct. Good times. Here's a couple stills from the current film called Reckoning:

I moved from LA to a smaller market too, and something that helped me stay active was checking local casting calls regularly. You’d be surprised how often a solid film industry audition pops up. It’s been a good way to meet other indie folks and find projects that align with what I'm into.

Right on. Yeah, even in these mountains a lot has been shot. So you actually do casting calls and network that way? Cool. Are you crew or a director ultimately?

I learned how to operate in the trenches of no-pay indie film in Hollywood—as all film school graduations do while they serve sushi in Malibu. Haha. You can PA on studio, but no guarantees and it's long days. I did that a bit and then went indie. It's been a long but fun ride. We just shot a 30-minute period piece (Reckoning the Movie | Theater Eleven Pictures, about to go into production on another and have a feature in development. Busy.
