2016 Interviews- Acceptances- Rejections

Good news! I finally heard from the University of Miami and I am ACCEPTED!! I was a little worried since there was no interview process with them, but I'm so happy! At least now I know I'll be going somewhere in the fall! :)

That is awesome! Congrats! Now that must take the edge off the waiting game and upcoming interviews! Happy to hear the news!

Hey Boethius and everyone! I am new and I wanted to ask you about the DW program interviews, because I email the school and they said the DW program does not hold interviews and that decisions are solely based on portfolio materials.

Yaaaay!!!!!!!!!! So excited for you! What a great way to start the weekend! TIme to celebrate!

AFI peeps, I had my directing interview, and I overheard the admissions office saying that March was going to be a busy month. All final decisions (acceptances, rejections, wait lists, and scholarship awards) will be sent on April 4, 4/4. <<they tell us this before and during the interview

They seem to be interviewing directing applicants first or at least that's what I gathered since all of the others interviewing were directing candidates.

Advice on the interview: expect the questions you assume (why film school, what films you hope to make, what movies you like, how will you pay, etc.)....My interviewers very thoroughly had read both my essays and had watched both my films (the "surprise" film and the other submission)-- they will most likely ask you questions about things you wrote in your statements. Overall, they're just trying to get to know you and what you're about. They try very hard, they say, to build an ensemble group that meshs well together as a class and contains a variety of voices. My advice is to be yourself and hope that who you are comes across in the questions you answer.

My interview did feel pretty intense (very serious, not easy-going/chill). The school definitely takes itself very seriously as a film school and creates this atmosphere of intensity(whether you like that or not)...

Good luck to you all! And it does kinda suck knowing April 4th is somewhat far off in the future.

Well if they are doing directing candidates and I have yet to hear, I assume AFI is a wrap for the 2nd year in a row. Good luck I hope you do well there, I have a friend who graduated from AFI and he loved it. He is also doing quite well in his post grad career.

@marzillanyu Hmm, that's really odd. Did you talk to the Tisch program directly about that?

I was told that they selected about half the applicants to do an informal interview with, while most of the acceptance decision is based on the creative work submitted in the application process. But I definitely spoke with an NYU professor.

Admittedly, I've been lurking for sometime, and wanted to sign on once finishing an interview at NYU to hopefully help out some other folks. I appreciate all those of you who have been so open and vulnerable about the process thus far, and I feel like it's only right to continue with the trend; see if there is anything I can offer as we all continue this nerve racking adventure....

Currently I have finished two interviews: UCLA & NYU

UCLA Interview:
3 panelists
Vibe: Conversational
Questions Included:
1) What have you been doing since undergrad?
2) Top 5 films? but don't say why
3) Is there a common thread that pops out to you about your top 5 films?
4) If you could pick one of those films, would any of them be similar to the types of films you want to make?
5) Pitch your short film idea

*I apologize, that's all I can remember at the moment, if more questions come to mind I shall post them up

NYU Interview:
3 panelists
Vibe: Conversational
Questions Included:
1) Why apply to film school?
2) Tell us a story from your childhood that resonates with you
3) What are you looking to get out of the program?
4) Why NY, why NYU?

I hope this helps some people! Continued luck to everyone.

Thanks Boethius for your insight! I guess I'll just wait to hear ... I was told decisions go out mid March. I'm an nyc applicant by the way, if you don't mind me asking what genre was you portafolio piece? Mine was Dramaa/Thriller. Thanks

Thr interview questions are a bit odd because most of the questions should have been answered in the statement of intent/purpose. Don't you guys think?

Hi everyone!!
I'm international student and this year I applied to UCLA directing program(doc), and I will do the interview on March, 3. However, I'm now somehow confused about their requirement.

They sent me the email mentioned that I need to prepare a documentary film idea for the interview, but the following requirements really confused me.

1. The pitch should take no more than two minutes.
2. The film idea should not exceed five minutes in length

What I thought was I have two minutes to pitch a film whose length would not exceed 5 minutes. Then I sent an email to confirm this. But I got the answer like this: This(5 minutes) refers to the time talking about the idea of the film, not the length of the film.

Since my undergraduate major is not film, I really don't know the difference between pitch and film idea. Though I've sent another email to ask this, the person contacted me seems to be only willing to reply one or two sentences each time, which can't really solve my problem.

Could anybody here help me out? Thanks a lot!!!

Massive congratulations, @katavi08! I'm happy that one of the most active members on this forum finally gets to breathe a little, haha! Hope you'll hear from other schools soon! :)

You've got it right. It's a two minute pitch for a potential five minute film. Basically if you can't tell the story in two minutes or less, then it's too long.

Good luck!

I just had my interview with the Dramatic Writing program of NYU. It felt a bit strange though, because all the time was used for me to ask any questions I might have. I asked if the professor had any questions for me, and he said no. So I was not asked to answer anything at all... The professor explained that my portfolio was impressive and the interview was meant to show their level of interest in me. Still, I felt a little confused, considering a majority of applicants on this forum have received interview invitations.

Anyone else wants to talk about their interview experience with DW of NYU?

Woah, did you mean LMU?? You'd be the first thats heard anything from them this year! Congrats on your acceptance!
No, it's the MFA program at Long Island in Brooklyn. lol

Hey guys,

Had my Skype interview with Columbia. Mine was short, 15mins! Similar questions, what projects am I working on right now? Why Columbia? What skills do I want to work on if accepted to Columbia? What are my weaknesses? Some questions about my dramatic writing sample regarding why does it mean to me and what it is about.

Not sure what to think about it.. it definitely felt a bit short so that is getting me worried. Good luck to the rest who's having their interview soon!
