already have a worthless BA in English, then realized I want to work in film

Basically, I'm looking for options. I'm interested in camera work (end goal of working as a DP or a cinematographer) and editing. I don't particularly want to shell out to go to film school all over again, especially since I am loan-free from undergrad (thanks Mom and Dad and state school!) but I'm not sure how else to go about getting the skills I need. People talk about just getting low totem pole jobs on productions and learning the craft as you go, but how the heck do you get even those starter jobs without any experience?

you would have to start with learning how to use the equipment. You can probably do this by crewing on set as a grip and spending time with the camera team, especially the 1st or 2nd ac. If they are nice, they'll explain what is what and how to use it.

in terms of editing, you start as a digitizer. Mainly you have to learn how to use a NLE of some kind, be it Final cut or avid or premiere.
then you find jobs or internships that will get you on hand experience.

apart from all that. it's up to how good you are and whether or not you're in the right place at the right time.
