It was the most labor intensive application I put together. The film directing program requires you to submit more parts for the portfolio than say the straight-up film and video submission. The main difference between the two MFA degrees is an ambition to work with actors. If you have no interest in working with them, then the film and video MFA is perfect and also has less required coursework. Overall, I suspect they want to see a consistency in effort and a visible commitment to the discipline your applying for. In my opinion, I think your film submission holds the greatest weight. So if your going to spend lots of time on any one thing, just stay focused on your work and make it as best as you can make it.

I just got my acceptance letter today for the film directing program. I'd already figured I haven't gotten in since other people had gotten their acceptances already far from Cal. and I only live 30 minutes down the road and I hadn't. But I got the nice envelope today. It's a relief because I'm still waiting to hear back from two other schools and my fear was that I'd be rejected from all three. Wheeewww

Sorry to hear about the rejection letter.

And for those of you that haven't heard anything, they are still looking at applications, I actually got an e-mail that, for whatever reason, my DVD portfolio's sound did not work for them. So I am sending all of my work in again to them over the net.

So they are still working on applications right now, and I even got mine in on the early dead-line so it may be a while before all the letters go out.

Rejection is for the Film and Video Program.

My portfolio DVD was straight narrative. I should have sent artsy or experimental films for sample. Unfortunately I had none of those.

Anyhow, good luck to those of you who applied.

BTW, Who was turn down in CalArts - Is it Lucas or Spielberg? I am always optimistic

Im an international, i finished my aplication by february because a matter wich wasnt my responsablity, but anyways Im still waiting for a letter... Sucks to be down here the mail takes much longer... But we'll see what happens... congrats to those who got in.

It's almost just as nerve wracking to be state side, as people have already reported in this thread getting both acceptance and rejection letters to the MFA in Directing program, and all has been quiet for a long time now. I'm sure you and I aren't the only ones on these boards still awaiting our results, gnomehunter.

I applied to NYU, Columbia and CalArts. Already rejected to NYU and Columbia never hit me up for an interview, so I have a feeling it's all coming down to CalArts for me. You?

I coudnt apply to any other because of the deadlines... so I only applied to CalArts. so we'll see what happens. Sorry to hear about NYU and Columbia interview...

And dont worry man, hopefully we'll make it!! and if not, who cares, neather the right or the talent to make movies will be taken away...

Exactly. It'll be disappointing not to get in anywhere, but I'm still working on projects all the time and have other contingency plans to turn after this experiment if it doesn't go well.

But it would be awesome to be back in school. I miss it.

It's not to late to apply to Chapman. Their deadline is April 1st. You might even have most of the requirements or maybe you could reuse or recycle personal statements, resumes..etc.

Just remember if you apply by that late dead-line for Chapman you have no chance of getting a fellowship.
