hi everyone! im a fourth year philosophy and computer engineering double major and i’ve come to the conclusion that if i’m going to get my masters i’m going to do it in film because i don’t think i can forgive myself if i don’t try my best at it.
i currently work part time but the pay is low so i can barely cover my expenses by myself and i’ll have to get the best scholarships possible to be able to attend any masters program. the state of america for international students in the US is pretty scary right now, yet the schools on my list are NYU (top choice because of my unusual background), Columbia, and AFI.
my fear is that if i go into a film mfa i’ll be leaving the cs industry for min 3 years, and maybe try to make it for many more until i can’t and i’ve lost out on practically all my paths. plus i’ll be applying when im 25, so my age will not be helping down the line.
i have two questions:
(1) have there been any international applicants for the film programs that have scored big in scholarships, especially NYU? how did you do it? how should i start preparing from this point on?
(2) is it too risky to leave cs? i know some people like Sam Esmail who got a cs degree and grinded until he got his start after the NYU & AFI combo. it’s still pretty evident i’ll be missing out on precious career building years.
thanks in advance!
