I watched High and Low for the first time in a while, showing it to my 18yo son. We've been watching a bunch of Asian cinema recently. He has no desire to go into film but loves watching movies with me.

Anyways... Back to High and Low. I had forgotten how good it is. It's amazing how much tension Kurosawa was able to build without hardly any score whatsoever. The train sequence is super tense. No score. Just train noises and great sound design. I love it.

The first half of the movie (and many parts) play more like a play as well - taking place in one room. Lots of tension created with just dialogue.

Have you seen High and Low? What movies have you been watching recently?

Watched La Haine with my 18yo son as he'd never seen it... I hadn't seen it in forever. Great film. We rented on Amazon prime and it annoyingly stopped the film and went to an ad right at the last shot - probably when it cuts to credits - but we wouldn't know. Completely ruined the watching experience - on a film we rented. Sigh. I think I'm going to buy a blu-ray player again. I had one when they first came out but it was slow and glitchy. Should be much better now.

Watched Obsession with my 18yo as he wanted to see it.

I didn't know much about the film except that it was doing really well theatrically and was being hyped. We'll the hype was worth it because it was really good but MAN that movie was scary and creepy. The cinematography was EXCELLENT and the camera placement and surgical editing kept on amping up the tension and creepiness.

But let's be real, it was really Inde Navarrette's incredible acting and voices that made it creepy and scary. She was absolutely excellent and definitely deserves an Oscar nomination for her role.

Amy Madigan's win for Weapons (which I still haven't seen yet) paved the way for horror films to be recognized. I really hope she's nominated.

As a side note I really wonder if Curry Barker was inspired by Quentin and Pulp Fiction for the first shot and scene of the movie.

Anyone else see it and have thoughts?
