FSU MFA Production 2013

I applied! Not sure how I feel about my application. I really have no idea what I should expect acceptance-wise. I go to a very well-respected academic university and I have a pretty good GPA, but I don't have a whole lot of experience with actual filmmaking (haven't worked in a crew of more than three before). I do have a pretty good grasp of storytelling after taking a few screenwriting classes and production classes. I think my writing sample was solid, though. But again, not really confident but not exactly without hope either. Curious to see how it goes.

Good luck with your app!

Same, I am in that state of completely second-guessing everything with this application and I have no idea what to expect. I feel like it could go either way. Best of luck!

I haven't seen any other FSU threads for the 2013 applicants, so if you'd like, feel free to use this one to post updates on the application process regarding interviews, acceptances, etc. And that's for both production and writing! I'm curious as to who on here applied for either.

Hey there, I'm an international applicant and I've applied for the FSU production as well. I haven't heard anything from them yet about the interviews, any one of you guys did?

Hello people,

I've noticed activity on the Graduate film school forums declining every year.

A short introduction - I used to scour these forums for information which was amazingly helpful as were the members. Trying to give back a little of what I can. I had gotten my interview invitation for FSU last year around the 2nd of February. Since I'm an international student, I chose the Skype interview as opposed to being interviewed in person (they had varying dates from February to March end!).

My interview was a mess. I struggled to speak. Anyhow, a couple of months passed and around April a polite mail was sent out by the university saying that they had chosen their 26 students and normally not all of them accept the invitation and they may contact additional applicants. That's about it. No mention of waitlist or still under consideration. Nothing at all.

Disappointed and giving up hope since I was rejected from all the three universities I had applied to, I moved back to working on shoots (I work in commercials production). A good 20 days later, I received an email from the film school. They had given me a spot for the fall semester. I was so stoked.

Yet, I couldn't start attending last year since I had visa issues. The associate dean was kind enough to offer me a deferment to next year. So, here I am ready to attend film school this year. They just confirmed my spot for Fall 2013 this week. It's been a journey 3 years in the making. And I thank God for it.

And for those of you hopefuls, try and be positive. You can usually expect a call till like July easily because sometimes things just don't work out for people selected and willing to go. My case for instance.

Looking forward to seeing any of you folks who get in. Take care and all the very best in life. Let me know if you have any queries.

I've also received the email about the interview too. As I'm an international applicant, I have to schedule a Skype interview.

@apocalypticus Congrats for making it to FSU this fall! I was wondering how the Skype interview might be like and if it is that intimidating since you've been through the Skype interview?

I also received the email and scheduled my interview for the last weekend, March 23. I'm curious who's choosing to skype and who's choosing to go in person. What do you think the advantages are for either?

Thanks and good luck!

@apocalypticus Congrats on your acceptance!

I also received an email this week for an interview. Trying to figure out a date that will work.

Does anyone know if they do rolling admissions during the interview process, or do they wait until the end of March once they're all done?

Also, here's a link to a post thread from a previous year, discussing FSU interviews, and one person talks about some skype questions that they remember.

I didn't look to see if they're talking about BFA or MFA interviews, but I imagine it gives you an idea of the kinds of questions them might ask. Hope it's helpful!

@Dancesaurus Thanks for the link! I think we'd get more information about the interview once all the interviews has been confirmed. I'm not so sure about the rolling admissions but looking at previous threads, seems like they only announce the acceptance once all the interviews were done.

I'm choosing to go by Skype as I'm an international applicant. But there were only 2 dates available for that and the earlier one is fully taken up so I took up the later slot. I asked them about the Skype interview and they said that they would recommend in person so that we're able to get to know the school and student better. I guess we just have to be ourselves and show our best in the interviews!

Hey all! Confirmed for an interview on February 16th. Anyone else going on that date? I wanted the first available date, since I live here locally. Not really nervous about the interview process, since everyone I've encountered at the school has been awesome. Now just waiting to hear the details; time, interview schedule, etc. Good luck to all who applied!

Flying out to FSU for the interview on March 9! Really excited!

Does anyone know what chances of admission look like after being selected for interview?

Hey guys! Have an interview scheduled for late March. To answer Manguforcheap's question, I think they interview about 90 people and have a class size of somewhere in the mid thirties.

Thank you all for the good wishes. I've still yet to get an official letter from the university, but yeah, to correct my last message, I was asked to confirm my spot.

@stee0221 - They have a class size of around 26.

The skype interviews are fairly simple but intimidating since you're not present physically. I was interviewed by the associate dean and two more professors. My interview was at around 11.30pm at night for me, which was 2pm for them.

Regarding the interview, they usually ask basic questions like why film school? And why FSU? What is the last film that you've seen? Why did you or did you not like it? They basically want to find out what influences you as a filmmaker and whether you're worthy of being in one of a whole batch of people that will be collaborating creatively and act as a team member. The thing with filmmaking is that, you have varied people with different mindsets and how you function together to make a great film and bringing a particular vision to the screen. It's not intimidating if you've planned out on how you want to present yourself. At the end of the interview they usually give you a chance to let you ask questions about the program and the film school.

Once your interview is done, they'll select whoever is best suited, around April, according to their evaluation.

My advice (and I don't think how it will be helpful since I myself goofed up) is just be yourself. They're not looking for creative geniuses off the bat or someone who's immersed in filmmaking per se.

Hope that helps.

I'm going Feb. 16th, too! and for the same reason. If anybody flying in for that date would like a place to stay I can link you to my couchsurfing account.

The programs website says that they interview 96 students for 24 seats. 6 writing majors are chosen from a separate pool to fill out the 30 students in the class.
