LMU Film and Television Production-Fall 2020 Official Thread

I can ask Jenny a couple of those questions with her tomorrow!
My questions so far are:
1) When will we know about on-campus housing (when we know if our application goes through).
2) Ask about a Facebook group/ is there one for students?
3) Ask what classes we can register for.
4) When will the jobs portal be available?

Let me know if y’all have any other questions I can ask : )
thanks for this!

This is a good list! Especially the bit about jobs

Anyone know if they are still giving admission to those who are on the waitlist? It has been awhile and I’m slowly losing hope.
I wouldn’t lose hope! I was waitlisted last year, and the office told me you could get off the waitlist any point between now and classes starting. I saw a couple people get off the waitlist around May/June : )

@emski94 Jenny is a saint. She's been incredible with me while I decide between LMU and USC (which I'm technically committed to, but LMU showed up with an interview request on April 15 and then interviewed me April 17th, admitted me a few hours later). She's answered a ton of questions and re-connected me with Patty Meyers for another round of questions.

I'm really leaning towards LMU over USC at this point which is really shocking me. I'm Writing and Producing for Television track!

@sarahkwUT She really is! When I visited the campus from Nebraska in 2018, she not only gave me a super personalized experience but she also checked in on me every step of the way!
USC is definitely a great school! I’m sure you’ll love whichever you attend :D What’s got you most on the fence about your decision?

@emski94 I think its the fact that its USC. When I applied, I certainly didn't expect to get in, let alone to all 4 schools. Those were the first scripts I'd ever written. I don't love that LMU is a year longer, but as someone who is completely changing careers/leaving a full-time job, the fact that the program teaches you from the ground up is really appealing and LMU has just felt so welcoming. And I'll admit that LMU's cost is appealing, lol.

So now it's deciding which program is going to help me become the eventual showrunner I want to be. Am I paying for prestige and connections at USC? I went through weeks of agonizing between USC and AFI and finally made a decision only to be right back here lol.

Any insights you have on LMU would be lovely - you seem to be very familiar with the program!

@sarahkwUT Most definitely - USC’s name is huge. I think a few things I liked the most about LMU are that it’s a small school that has a big emphasis on career development and collaboration. I really like the First Pitch event they have at the end of your third year where you’re able to give your portfolio to professionals in the field, and I also like how they pair you with a professional who checks in on you for three years.

I‘m grad school because I want a better chance about getting a job in the field easily and because I’d also like to teach between writing gigs. LMU seems like it really wants its students to succeed - and although I know USC offers a lot of BIG industry connections, it’s always felt more like a directing school to me...and it seems like I’d get swallowed in the sea of students.

Those are my initial impressions : ) But again, I don’t think you’re gonna go wrong with either decision!

@emski94 You've put my thoughts into words accurately here. People think I'm insane to even consider turning away from USC and a lot of the shows I love were written by their alumni. But I do have a feeling of being "just a number" there and kicked out of the nest at the end of year two.

LMU graciously extended my time to decide until the 6th, but more and more, I'm looking that way. But it does throw a wrench in my plans to live in Los Feliz/Echo Park, ha. I'm told that would be quite a commute.

Here’s some info from my phone call with Jenny!

1) Housing - I put in my application for Playa Del Oro. She gave me the email address for the guy who takes care of grad student housing (if you message me I can get it to you too). She also gave me this link for off-campus housing options @sarahkwUT : Finding Off Campus Housing - Loyola Marymount University

2) Facebook Student Groups: The school itself doesn’t curate one - Jenny said students usually create them : ) In the coming weeks, we’ll get an email on the MyLMU portal to connect all of us. From there we can make groups.

3) Registration: Info will be coming out soon! She’ll be sending an email (probably around the end of the month) with class info, and we’ll be able to sign up.

4) Jobs: Portal to look through LMU jobs should populate after 2 weeks of your enrollment. Delays may happen just because of the way of the world right now.

5) COVID-Related Things: Updates will be sent but the university, but for right now they’re planning in-person classes as well as housing.

This was the gist of it! Jenny made it sound like this check-in will be scheduled with grad students in every department, so check yer email : )

Thank

Film School during COVID-19

I hope everyone is doing well and staying safe during this uncertain time. This article today is going to be a little different from the norm! Chris had the wonderful idea of writing up a little something about how different film schools are handling the COVID-19. I jumped on board immediately...

I did! From Patty - she wanted to know if I was okay with attending in person. I didn't realize there was an online option, but I'm toying with taking that option, given that the last 4 weeks are online anyway and moving across the country right now without the ability to visit beforehand feels daunting - having a hard time finding housing, etc.
