I have recently decided to pursue a post-graduate degree in film production (a few months ago). I received my bachelor degree from the University of Colorado, where I majored in creative advertising, but have since realized that I would like to work in film, since it's what I would truly like to do with my life. I am interested in attending a program where I will gain a basic understanding of each part of film production, and will be able to learn more advanced skills in certain areas, such as directing and editing. I am still unsure in which direction I would like to work but I am very interesting in idea creation/execution and I enjoy seeing things from beginning to end, so direction is an obvious possibility.
I originally planned on doing an MFA at a university, such as Chapman, Wisconsin @ Milwaukee, Loyola and perhaps a few others. I have come across other schools that offer one-year certificates in film, such as NYFA, the Colorado Film School, the Motion Picture Institute, the Los Angelos Film School, and international programs such as the Vancouver Film School, The International Film School of Paris, London Film Academy and others.
I have limited film experience, including a few classes during my bachelor's degree, a television program I co-wrote/directed/produced in high school, a few short films I've made with friends over the years, and a professional short film I just worked on in New Zealand.
I'm wondering what would be a better option for me. I understand that I might get a better education through an MFA program, but I also don't have the finances I will need for a three-year program and would like to begin work in the industry sooner, rather than later. Also, does anyone know if an international program would be a good way to go, or is that something I should steer clear of? Thanks for the help everyone, and sorry for such a lengthy post.
