Journalism Major with limited film experience interested in DePaul, Chapman. Syracuse, Duke, USC, UT Austin, CU Boulder, Ohio University, UIowa

Hello, discovering this website was one of the best thing that happened in 2026. I am a journalism major in my last semester which will end in Fall 2026. Although my program was a mix bag of both film and journalism courses, as a film major I could only do a few film and production courses which were foundational or introductory. My strongest skills are screenwriting, direction and creative strategy. I have written and adapted both scripts and plays that recieved appreciation from my professors. I have recently directed a documentary and was selected in a highly selective documentary program in my country. I am working on film archive projects these days which led to an interest in analog filmmaking and experimental programs especially the following: Duke, CU Boulder, USC, DePaul and UIowa.

I would really appreciate if someone tells me what these programs look for in an applicant, what kind of projects would make my portfolio stand out as I have limited technical experience with camera. I have only used dslr and have no experience with industry or professional cameras.

Re USC, there is a really good interview we did with one of the admissions people which has great advice for all programs:
