UT Austin MFA 2019

Congrats to you too! Yes! I went to undergrad here and have been working here since, but am originally from Austin :)

Oh Cool. I am a true east coaster! Grew up in rural new jersey, went to Bard, been in the city a long time now. Do you have any sense if people actually get in off the waitlist?

That’s awesome! I talked to the program coordinator yesterday, it seems like it is rare, “but not unheard of.” Especially since there are only 2 screenwriters.

Man, it seems like EVERY person in this got either accepted or waitlisted, but heard back nonetheless. I’ve still here nothin’ at all, and MyStatus still just says “in review”.

Do they make those who are probably denied sweat this long for any reason? Has anyone received an official declined email yet?

Same thing for me! So you're not alone.

I officially accepted my place at Michener. I also learned that I can take production classes as well! My schedule seems to be very flexible. Only 5 screenwriting and 3 playwriting (my secondary) required. 10 classes left of my choosing, so I may even see some of you production folks around!

Wow, huge congrats! Michener sounds like such a bizarrely cool program, and everything you post about it just makes it seem cooler. I didn't apply because I figured, with only two people going in, I had absolutely no shot in hell of getting in. But it seems they picked a great candidate. Good luck!!!

I don't think anyone should ever count themselves out. The Gre is expensive, but I felt it was a worthy investment because Michener was my top choice during the application process. I was so determined that I paid the GRE fee twice after I realized I couldn't make it to the first one. I did psych myself out once I submitted the application, thinking there was no way they'd choose me, and started to focus on LMU and AFI which I thought I had better chances at, just to hear from Michener first!

Also, the person who was the head of deciding the 7 screenwriters also was apart of deciding the 2 screenwriters for Michener. I honestly think the fact that I applied to both programs helped a lot. Because essentially, if you make it into the 7, you could have made it into Michener if you applied. I'm sure it's not that straight forward but it's what I gathered.

So my adivce for future applicants is to apply for both. Be honest in both applications and see where you end up! My personal statement for both was similar, but I 100% put more heart into my Michener one. It had several more reasons why it was perfect for me at this point in my life. I loved the fact I'll be around Poets, fiction and playwriters, and that I have three years to grow as a writer in a relaxed environment.

I'd never heard of Michener before this (under a rock I guess). But this sounds very very cool. I'm definitely going to look it up. CONGRATULATIONS!

Has anyone else for MFA Production (directing) received a creative fellowship? This makes my decision very complex between UT and some other schools I've been offered (mainly USC).

From what I've heard, they've sent out all accepted and waitlists about 2-3 weeks ago. Those have until April 15th to accept, and that's when the school hopes to send out any other acceptances for spots that might still be open. Then they hope to have everyone's status updates by April 20th.

Gotcha, I was starting to wonder, but that makes sense. Thanks for the update!

they sent out all creative fellowships, mona said they were limited. I didn't get one either. Coming out of pocket and scholarships, plus FinAid for the first year
