NYU Tisch Dramatic Writing MFA Fall 2023

I interviewed with Robin today! I absolutely loved talking to her, it was a lovely conversation and she also said very lovely things about my work. It was very relaxed and just generally a really lovely interview. Very excited to hear back!

I had an interview with Shinho Lee today, but idk if it went very well. It was mostly him talking about the program the whole time, I actually barely said anything. My Zoom was glitching so we had to change to just a regular phone call. He didn't mention my creative sample at all, and it only lasted 20 minutes. 😕

Robin told me that it would likely be about a month before decisions come out

Ooh! No she didn't say that to me but that's very interesting to know! I submitted an episodic script and said it's definitely my main interest in writing but that I was open to not being pigeonholed into one genre or format and was open to writing other formats (I have a background in film and have some experience playwriting too). I did mention to her though that this is the first time I've ever written a pilot script, so not sure if that goes in my favour or not either lol

I think you’re fine. I told her I’d never written a spec script for an existing series, and she was like “oh don’t worry we can teach you”. Like if we knew how to do everything perfectly we wouldn’t be going to grad school! She also really wanted to make me aware that the program is very expensive. In general, I appreciated the transparency. I honestly didn’t leave the interview with a strong feeling either way about whether I was getting in or not. But from what I understand the interview isn’t even really that important. The interviewer writes a bunch of notes which goes to the admissions committee, but they primarily make decisions based on the portfolio.

I hope it's based on the portfolio, because my interviewer didn't even let me talk.

just had my interview :) He told me it would be about 15 minutes, and it was roughly 15-20 mins. Very lovely conversation. Brief but nice mix of him asking me questions and me asking him questions about the program. This is my third time interviewing (I've been waitlisted twice so I'm hoping the third time is the charm!) and each one has been different. From what I gather, they are mostly assessing if you are a strong fit for the program environment. Less assessing your artistry (because that is clear from the sample and personal statement). He was so kind and ended things saying his fingers were crossed for me so now the waiting begins :) I am a playwriting applicant, with interest in crossing over to the other genres as well.

Wow three times? I hope this is your year!
