2016 Interviews- Acceptances- Rejections (3 Viewers)

Yep, I got my USC rejection today as well. Not a surprise, tbh. I am already in the mindset of going to LMU anyway. Still waiting on Chapman and UT, but we'll see.

i went to the campus interview last Friday, at Calarts, for MFA-Directing program. However, I haven't heard anything from them yet. I saw the excel sheet ppl indicated that they were admitted...congrats! im just wondering if im on the waiting list or be rejected which means?
thx =D Being so anxiously waiting...arghhh.h.

I had my Skype interview of the same program last week, they told me that the result may come out " in couple weeks", so I think it's still too soon to feel pessimistic. But how's your feeling about the on-campus interview? The information about CalArts's FDP program is very limited and somehow I have doubts about it (if I get lucky enough to be admitted)... How's it different from the other film school?(UCLA NYU Chapman LMU etc.)

Just got accepted into Chapman's MFA Screenwriting program! The schools are rolling out their decisions this weekend, it seems. Stay positive, everybody. Even if you don't get into your top choice, or any of the schools, there's more than one way to skin a cat; film school is just one method to achieving what you want.

I'm curious, what did you get from them? Email? Letter? Or just some login info like me?

Yeah, it was confusing. I got an email from service desk about the login stuff. So I called the admissions office and she told me I was accepted. They apparently mailed the acceptance letters out on Wednesday so we should be getting them soon.

So it seems you got in too! :D

Yep, I got it yesterday and was waiting to hear more from them and/or other people because it was bizarre ;)

Still waiting to hear back from Chapman and USC. Not holding out too much hope for the latter but hopefully I still have a chance with Chapman...

I just got my official acceptance letter from Chapman like 20 mins ago and they haven't notified that many ppl, so I definitely think you should keep hope alive for that one ;)

USC rejection today. Earlier I was told by them that because my undergrad wasn't regionally accredited, I wouldn't be eligible anyway, so maybe that had something to do with it. I know UCLA told me the same thing, so we'll see if my provisional UCLA admit status carries through the graduate school review.

I got a USC rejection today too (the decision notification to check my YOUSC hit my inbox at 2:26AM PST). I went onto YOUSC and opened it just now. I had to wonder if it was because of the writing sample I chose (previously published and well-edited by more than one editor, but the genre of the piece could have been a risk). But, I'll try not to dwell on it. I was kind of expecting a rejection from there this week because I didn't hear anything when those accepted did.

I'm second guessing my essays which were kinda experimental because I sent more traditional ones to the schools that have expressed interest.

I was trying to differentiate myself and hoped they'd be more open minded. My bad, I guess? *shrugs*

But whatever. I'm excited to hear back from Columbia and AFI, and Chapman already offered me a place, so we'll see...

I wrote my essays for USC with the same thoughts in mind. :) I told the truth in hopes I'd stand out and hoped I'd get someone open minded reading my app. I also used the same creatively organized personal essay for my LMU app, so ugh. I've been truly hoping that wasn't a bad idea. :( The essay does what is asked for, on the other hand...

@Solomon_E what was the genre? Just curious. You've alluded to it a few times - though you shouldn't feel the need to share if you'd rather not!

Dang, I wonder if my notification is a bug. The notification hit my inbox at 2AM PST yesterday, but I haven't been able to open it since. Still comes up with a blank page. They said it takes a few days for it to show up. But from reading everyone's posts, it seems like they're getting their decisions immediately. What a tease!

You received yours before any of us so that's weird. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you that it isn't a rejection like all the ones that were sent out today, tho :)

Thanks @WriterGirl , I appreciate it haha. Still keeping hope, but I think I'm at least a little bit more prepared emotionally for a rejection than I was a few days ago. So that's the bright side! :)

@Solomon_E , don't worry! Better to stick to your creative convictions and be true to yourself. No matter what, I'm positive you'll continue to make art that you're proud of! That's how I justify it to myself anyway.

Hi panda - I don't mind sharing. :) My writing sample for USC was a short dramatic fantasy story about characters who are angels. It would probably best appeal to urban fantasy and fantasy readers who enjoy the presence of both a male and a female lead, a distinctive fantasy world, and a love story as well (examples of the genre mix here are the books of best selling authors Nalini Singh and Gena Showalter, or so I've heard since I haven't read those authors' angel-focused books). The story was originally written to show how two side characters who appear in a book series I have planned out met the other angels in the series.

The thing I thought was a risk about subbing this to USC was that there are some things in the story that may seem unusual to readers who have never dealt with fantasy stories of this type before but are within the norm for the genre. I also usually write stories about more modern-seeming female and male leads in settings more comparable to modern earth. So I wasn't sure this story was the best pick to represent "me" even though I've gotten good feedback on it from the fiction industry folks and readers interested in my other, more modern-seeming fantasy/scifi suspense stories. If I'd had more time and two of my letter of recc writers for my USC application hadn't gone AWOL (which was the reason I lost so much time, but I realize what happened was out of my control), I would have subbed ten pages of a modern supernatural suspense teleplay with one of my favorite female leads. :)

Edited to add: I used this fiction story in the application mainly because 1) I was confident in the editing and quality of writing, and 2) I lost too much time to polish a screenplay or teleplay before the USC deadline because of some unexpected events.

Thanks, @ArellaTV! On the bright side of things, I have learned a lot about the application process during the past 4 or 5 months.
