2016 Interviews- Acceptances- Rejections

Hi everybody!!

Anyone who applied to NYU Directing program heard back (acceptance wise)?

Also, re: USC, do you guys know how we select courses? I found the course catalogue but I'm wondering how many courses we can select per semester, which ones are the ones that are compulsory --- if any etc.? Also, the website says classes start August 22nd or around that date, anyone know if this correct for this fall class? I'm guessing we are supposed to receive info by mail but there's no functioning post office where I am based so not sure how they plan on communicating the info....

Any tips welcome, thank you guys!!! And good luck to everyone!

Nope! Haven't heard back from NYU grad film. Had my interview just last week though - not quite sure when I should start looking out for an email!

LMU and Chapman Insist that we should declare our decision two weeks after official letters.
which is two weeks from now. UCLA and AFI have not announced accepted applicants and UCLA's interview date is three weeks from now. I did not see this joke coming when applying to schools. It is absolutely a dilemma :|

It's ridiculous and it's stressing me out. I need to hear from AFI (April 4th!) and Columbia before I can make any decision!

Hey all! Just heard back from Northwestern that I was accepted! They sent a general email with a letter attached and then a member of the faculty called me a few hours later. Good luck to those others waiting on their decisions!

Hi archbrenemy, that's great news! Thanks for posting. I'm still waiting on Northwestern's decision.

@archbrenemy congrats! And @Solomon_E I am sincerely rooting for you!

And completely agree that quick (and rather large)deposit requirements kind of suck but as stated the schools have their reasons for doing so. I would also want to get a sense of each option and all funding possibilities before throwing down money. (500d in USC's case).

I guess that might be the case. But at the same time extremely odd to get anoyed about that and just skip. To add to all this - it wasn't a student film so logos and credits were kind of obligatory. I guess I could have cut them away for the sake of the application video but it honestly never crossed my mind.
Don't get me wrong it still sucks big time on their part for not watching it. Not very professional after the work you put in.

@marion06 hey! the admission letter doesn't give a deadline for the payment of the 500$. However, Admitted Graduate Student Day is on April 1, so I'm wondering if that would be some sort of deadline? Are we supposed to make a decision before April 1st? To others who received the admission letter, have you seen any deadline to accept the offer?

@all, tbh I'm a bit annoyed because info is coming so slowly from USC and NYU is taking forever to send out all decisions. How do they expect us to choose? Or maybe the schools are all so confident, they think we either desperately waiting for them and/or we will pick their school no matter what (hence the NYU delay...?)

Thanks to @Point Break (thanks again btw!) I was able to gather some info on classes at USC and how many units to take and all, see here: http://catalogue.usc.edu/preview_program.php?catoid=2&poid=1051&returnto=364 for those who didn't, albeit, I feel I was the only one. LOL But I still need more info such as who teaches which class, resume of professors, etc.

One (probably silly) question for those who may know or current graduates: WHEN IS FIRST DAY OF CLASS AT USC? Is it end of August/Sept... ? I thought I read somewhere August 22nd but I've read so many things about so many diff topics, I'm starting to second guess where I read this piece of info...

Good luck everyone, for those waiting HANG IN THERE.
@peace.

Hi Nikhail - I'm applying to their Media Art program, which is their equivalent of a film production program. Looks like most others on the spreadsheet are applying to that program too. I haven't heard back from them, but hopefully lurkers can post if they've been accepted to the screenwriting program.

Were you looking to connect with classmates or get more info on the program? I'm not too familiar with how the low residency program works, but I live in Boston and have taken courses at Emerson/with Emerson professors and worked with a lot of their filmmakers - it's a great school!

Cool. Yeah I just wanted to get an idea of what the other students are like. How would you compare Emerson to Chapman? I noticed you applied to both.

@peace. It does help thank you very much! I am still waiting to hear back from USC so I'm not sure the deadline will be the same, but at least I know what is the earliest deadline. I am hearing back from AFI on April 4th so at least I will be able to make an informed decision before giving them a $500 deposit.

Thank you, Paul!

Both Emerson and Chapman have soundstages, editing rooms, etc - so they both feel like studio-driven schools (though both encourage location shooting, too, of course). However, Chapman is more of a "conservatory" style, where each person focuses solely on what they were admitted for (directing, writing, etc). At Emerson, the writing program is separate, but the Media Art program seems like it's more well-rounded in terms of the things you focus on. I think that at Chapman, because it's conservatory, some of the screenwriting students will see their films get made by production students, and I haven't heard about that kind of thing at Emerson - but doesn't mean it doesn't happen!

For me, the biggest thing is that the locations are vastly different: LA vs Boston. I love Boston, and there is definitely filmmaking happening here, especially indie stuff, but for the bigger productions, rumor has it that studios hire "above the line" in LA, then hire crew locally. Which is totally fine if you don't like LA and still want to work on sets, just a different vibe. The whole city isn't as enmeshed in the filmmaking culture, which can be a pro or a con! Something to think about as you network, even if you're living elsewhere during the low-residency writing program.

This info is mainly gleaned from my tours of the various schools, but I'm definitely coming at it from more of a production-focus. Hope this is at least a little bit helpful!

Thanks that's so helpful . Now more interested in Chapman because of the getting scripts produced aspect . I hear they have a fund to make films in the 250k to 750k , 5-10 a year so I'm guessing micro features

Hey all, I found out yesterday that my admission to NYU Dramatic Writing was "an error" due to lack of funds. Has this, or anything REMOTELY similar, happened to anyone before? I couldn't find anything on the internet and I'm still trying to make sense of all this. Honestly, something feels off about this.

A more detailed account of what happened is here: http://reginakimblog.com/2016/03/15...-admission-my-short-lived-trip-to-cloud-nine/

Wow. I'm so sorry that happened to you. This has happened to me regarding a film festival once, and it is the utmost worst when you receive a congratulations, and then it is taken away from you. I could only imagine how you felt with a school you really wanted to go to. If it was regarding "lack of funds", they should have figured that out before they gave you a call.

I also think that's extremely unprofessional and you don't deserve that at all. Did you try talking to anyone else from the school?

I'm so, so sorry this happened to you. :(

@ballena100 wow, that is just terrible... I can only imagine how you feel. I hope it just makes you stronger and you fight twice as hard to reach your goals going forward.

@ballena100 I'm so sorry this happened to you.. It is one thing I'm aware of that could happen.. Tisch and graduate school are two separate departments and it seems like the latter still have the decision making power over the film school. I don't have a high GPA, so I have a feeling IF I get accepted, i'll have to hold back my excitement until the official letter comes in from the graduate admission. It is horrible.. I hope things will work out for you with other schools.
