2017 - MFA Applicants

Congratulations!

Congratulations!

I just had to reply to this. I'm currently a USC Spring 2017 applicant and I grew up in Athens...I am flabbergasted to hear they have such a good program. Maybe if I'm denied I'll go back to my roots!

Please do! It's really impressive and the support is pretty unparalleled. Give it a look, you might be surprised!

Wow for the originator of the thread I sort of fell off, oops! Got busy at work.

Hey Elle! I'm preparing to apply to Film Directing MFA programs, and your enthusiasm is really encouraging. I wish you all the best this time around.
I actually took the GRE back in 2014, when I was applying to some non-film programs, but I plan to use my scores again. Good luck!
I spent the summer mostly planning/writing the short film I'm submitting for my video portfolio, and drafting a personal statement. In the process of editing now, hoping it turns out good.
Any particular reason for applying to two different UT Austin programs?

I like both programs they offer. There's slightly different approaches and different funding and I very much like them both, so I figure might as well apply to my top choice programs even if two are on the same campus.

The Michener Center program is a program for "regular" writers or novelists, correct? That's what it seems like when I look it up. I guess writing is writing and storytelling is storytelling. Each program should help nurture those skills.

Haven't decided for sure which path you want to take yet @IndecisiveElle ?

I think someone else already mentioned but there is a screenwriting focus at Michener. It also allows access to the RTF courses. I've been working professionally in the film industry for about 7 years now, I'm not planning a career change into novelist or poetry or even playwriting, but I appreciate the approach of the program. I also find the ability to have fiction writing as a secondary area of interest, even if I don't have any professional intentions in that regard.

@IndecisiveElle - not applying for USC's writing dept? The writers I've met and have just started are all in wonderland right about now, so I'm guessing the program is pretty decent :) I wish you all the best Elle. I am rooting for you!

I've heard great things about USC but the program and the campus aren't for me. I went to UCLA Professional Program (I think we talked about that last year?) after undergrad and I preferred their campus, faculty, etc over USC.

I think that covered all my responses?
I took my GRE last week and I have my scores back already, including my analytical writing portion. I'm happy with the writing score - math is still rather low but way better than I started studying. Verbal is OK. I had told myself if I got under a certain writing score I'd retake it and wound up doing considerably better so I'm still on the fence if I want to put myself through more studying when I'm so busy this fall as it is.

Hey Guys, I also applied to the MFA Cinematic Arts Spring 2017 Program at USC. I haven't heard anything, but I know we'll find out by the end of October, so any day now. We'll also find out the decision via YouSC. Good luck to everyone who applied!

So, I applied to the Directing MFA USC program for Spring 2017. I had an interview this morning! I can at least take that as a positive sign that I'm being considered. Also, scanning through stories my interview lasted a half hour and our conversation was great! I have a good feeling, but haven't been able to tell from past stories if many people get interviewed and then denied...anyone have experience with this or thoughts?

Hey congrats on the interview! By the Directing MFA do you mean the Film and TV Production? Because I checked for a Directing MFA on their website and they don't have one.

Has anyone heard anything about Emerson’s low-res MFA in Writing for Film and Television or Raindance's MA in Film? Just curious :)

Anybody applying to NYU this year?

I am pretty sure someone applied and was accepted there last year. Might want to do a search of the forums and see what comes up.

Yup! Though I'll be applying for Dramatic Writing.
Oh cool! How are you finding the application process? My first deadline's coming up on Tuesday

Good luck to everyone with deadlines today! :D

One down, three (or five) to go. I submitted my USC application yesterday morning, now the waiting begins!

Best of luck to everyone else applying to USC. Submitted last week but got the last recommender notification today so now I can live stress-free (until tomorrow when I get back to tackling the other four applications I have left).

How's everyone's applications going?
Good! I am finishing up UCLA's application at the moment. For screenwriters, it's up to 200 pages of your best work and I'm debating on what to send. I am trying to keep everything top-notch while showing a wide variety of genres.

I can now trust that USC is very meticulously reviewing these applications because I just got an email asking for clarification about a gap in my education history (accidentally put that I graduated high school in '07 when in fact I started in '07).

UCLA and both UT- Austin program apps are in!
Now the wait begins...
I'm still debating if I should reapply to Northwestern or LMU but I have till January to decide so I am not stressing. My materials are ready to go if I do.
