It was pretty good. USC requests a lot of material to get a better insight into the applicant's portfolio. It was nice gathering all this material and preparing it for the application. I was selected to interview, in which I felt very comfortable, it was truly a delight.
Thoughts on where to go:
AFI Producing
Columbia Creative Producing
USC Peter Stark Program (waitlist)
I want to know thoughts based on the program first. Then, il Ladd the specific details of my situation and aid. Thank you to all for feedback
Hi Everyone, so I got waitlisted for fall 203 for the MFA production program at USC, but the email says that they will offer Spring 2024 admission if a spot does not open up. I am just wondering if this guaranteed, and if this has happened to anyone else that can confirm? Thanks!
this application requires a lot of materials and I took a lot of time doing it. I think my weakest point was my writing sample which I have since improved.
Good! I didn't worry about my 10 page sample because that one was pretty polished. I found it fun to do the prompts and really felt like I got to show some different sides of myself in the application. I went into this process with an "if it's meant to be, it will be" mindset and I think that...
This was my first time applying and I honestly didn't expect to get in; most of my materials were done at the very last minute, but that doesn't mean I didn't put great thought and effort into them. My ten-page writing sample was the only thing I had prepared beforehand.
The decision...

Hi all, I'm from SoCal, and I'm thinking of applying to USC for the screenwriting MFA program when applications open in fall 2023.
I actually have a degree in creative writing, and I've built a decent career as a communications consultant in the past decade or so. However, I constantly dream...
Hi everyone 😊
My name is Nicholas, I am an award winning film director from London, UK - and I am currently in my 2nd year on the Directing MFA at The American Film Institute. The film that me and my team are producing is called SOME KIND OF PARADISE, and tells the story of a lonely Arizona...
Application is going well, I feel confident about it. I had a great interview, and the professor raved about my personal statement. They didn't mention anything else about my materials though.
Please share your USC interview questions in this thread as well as the application year thread. :)
Also here's our old article with past interview questions to all programs:
Hey folks! Thought to create a thread for Peter Stark for this year as interview notifications are expected to be sent within the next 2-3 weeks.
This is my second year applying, I was waitlisted last year. Good luck to everyone in this cycle!
The USC app was probably my favorite because they require different types of essays instead of a normal personal statement. It makes you dig deep. I also liked the scene prompts.
Hi everyone, I'm in the process of applying to MFAs in the US, Canada and the UK and as you all know they all require some form of visual sample of your work. Now, I attempted to shoot a short film this year that I was going to use to apply for film school with and I spent a lot of money on it...
Second time applying. Much happier with my creative challenges this time around but less happy with my 10-page sample. Also submitted the same (slightly edited) autobiographical statement which maybe I should have re-written but hey-ho.
It was tough for the most part, lot of things I'm overthinking but I think overall I did a good app. Had many people give me feedback and edits on my personal statement. Tried to not overthink the video introduction and just speak honestly. Might come across as generic but I'm hopeful the rest...
First time applying.
So.many.essays! Come on, USC! Get it together!
.....They were fun to write, though, even if they took some time. Excited to hear back!
And excited to get through the applications for other schools. Whew!
Hi everyone, I'm applying to the USC MFA at SCA and was struggling a bit with the collaborative question. I'm not entirely sure what type of lesson do they mean - something more personal or more technical/about the process? I'd wager its a mixture of both but if there is anyone who answered this...
