Need advice: which school?

Hi. I am freshman from Kyiv (Ukraine).
I am planning to study filmmaking in USA.
I`ve surfed the net and the really interesting variant I found is Tisch Film School.
What do you think about it? Can you advise me something else?
P.S. I don`t need only theory, I need more practical knowledge...

Welcome Andrew. You have an awesome last name! :)

I'm going to Tisch at NYU this fall to begin film school. Tisch has two majors for film. Film and Television is the good one, there is also a Cinema Studies which is for theory. Tisch seems great to me! Hoeks (on this board) is finishing up there, and hopefully he'll pop in here and say how cool it is.

From what I've seen so far (I visited twice):

The faculty are incredibly smart, friendly, and energetic. They have a great sense of humor and seem to REALLY know what they're talking about.

The resources and facilities are really great. The equipment seems fairly new and apparently it is easy to get past the rules about borrowing it if you know the right people.

The student work I've seen is simply breathtaking.

The tuition is absurd (around US $47,000) and they're not very good with financial aid - you can't expect a very large scholarship ($9,000 seems to be the max)

You won't film anything until your second year, instead you spend the first year learning the basics.

You can't borrow equipment for your own projects; only for class related projects (this rule can be bypassed, according to students)

The school is in a nice, arty, sub-section of NYC and feels a lot cleaner, quieter and nicer than the surrounding areas.

For your senior year you will compete with other students to be allowed to make a really good final film. Half of those who want to (it is not required to graduate) are allowed to use school resources, etc, to complete the project. Some of the others do it anyway, with their own equipment.

I'm going to keep this brief but,

I'm going into my senior year at tisch and I love it, couldn't see myself going to film school anywhere else.

The staff is great, very helpful and the students are at times cocky as rumored, but this will push your work to the next level. If you have the means and the drive, come join us.

Thanks for replies!
I`ve visited another film school sites and found out that these film schools are not quite professional.
The price is....hm. But i have a decision of these problem: Ukrainian new president said that he will give much money to students for their study outside our country.
We hove some film schools, but it is SUXX...

What do you mean "not quite professional" ? Are you including Tisch in that? I'm not sure I understand. :)

Tisch:
I didn`t find the rules of entering Tisch on it`s site. which exams should i pass to enter?
How long does the full course last?
How much money should i pay for one course?
And what about career after getting a diploma?
Cause I don`t want to simply have a diploma and to be proud of it. I want to make money on directing...

Well, if you want to make money of directing right after film school, you need the following: Talent, a LOT of talent, luck, luck, luck...and luck...and relationships. Most people work their way up as Crew, or at a studio (what do I know...). You won't get out of any filmschool in the world and direct a film for big money (unless you are real good or lucky)

After getting film education in the USA i am planning to go back to Ukraine and have some practise by directing ads and short films...
Then...Who knows?

I`ve started to learn this information and i have a first question:
what if i have no film courses in my school. There are no such courses in my country....
What should i do?

For the portfolio you mean? You do have a choice of doing photographs, storyboards, or writing instead... but it might not be as good. I'd recommend just putting together a 10 minute reel of your best work. If you don't have anything good enough start working on a short film!
