UT Austin Screenwriting 2024

Hey everyone, I'm new to filmschool.org. I'm trying not to stress out about UT. I haven't heard anything regarding an acceptance or waitlist. I know if I don't get accepted it's not the end of the world. I also applied to a few programs regardless. I hope whoever else is waiting is doing well. Remain patient and know your talent and abilities will be noticed from some program. Regardless a school does not define what skills you possess. You do! Best of luck to all! And congrats to those who have received acceptances and even waitlisted decisions!

Hey everyone! This might be premature, but I had this idea and thought I should hop onto the momentum here before we all go our separate ways. I wanted to offer up trying out a zoom workshop for anybody who might want to give it a try. Everyone in this chat seems really involved and interested in continuing to write in the hope of going to grad school, plus it sounds like a lot of us are writing on a similar level and could help each other out.

I've hosted/helped to run informal weekly workshops over zoom before with my friends, and despite all being dif genres we had at least a few months of consistent success lol, so I'm more than happy to host or figure out logistics. Anybody in this chat would be welcome, and maybe if people have other friends who are interested we could invite them too! This also might be a completely pie in the sky idea lol. But if you would be interested in this, just let me know and we can see if it would actually be a viable thing!

That's a really cool idea! 💡

Perhaps create a post in the forum below to see if people are interested:

I am also interested!! 👀

Now, the real question is how big is this going to be. Are you "invite all of filmschool.org" ready?
Lol I can make a post in the Screenwriting Discussions group if people are thinking that would help. Honestly what I did with my friends to keep it manageable was we just met every week and workshopped one person's stuff each week. Idk how serious people would be about it but if there were 4-6 of us from this chat (or even just us 3 who have replied) then it could be like, you get workshopped like once a month give or take.

In my old screenwriting classes it was typically like you get 10 or so pages workshopped at a time, but again, don't know how serious people would want to make it. When I did it with my friends we just submitted short stories or excerpts of other stuff, and then gave mostly verbal feedback. But if people wanted to do the whole "turn in a written page of critiques" like you're in an actual class thing, that's also cool.

Maybe I could make a groupme or a whatsapp to discuss? Idk what people use to talk to each other these days lol.

WOW!!!! Congrats to everyone accepted to UT or on the waitlist! 🥳

I've been up to my eyeballs with work and I'm missed so much LOL. What greatness to come back to. :) Sending good vibes to all the UT applicants here!

How does the waitlist work???

I'm still waiting on my official "no" from UT, and I'm tired of waiting! Celebration Rejection is happening tomorrow. I picked up the cake today and so I'll be stuffing my face and wearing a crown while I do it.

I love the idea of a Zoom group or private chat. This has been such a positive, fun experience, and I had been thinking that it would sad to part ways. I would definitely love to join an ongoing group. ☺️

We can have our cake AND eat it too! @Rose
Let's have a private group chat on here! I think it's fitting!

The waitlist means that life still goes on, basically. We are the backup soldiers. 🪖 The reserves, if you will. The school needs 7 peeps, so if someone doesn't take up the offer to study at UT, one of the waitlisters is granted admission. So, our final decision has been pushed back to mid to late-April.

There could be up to 11 people on the waitlist. Not many people decide not to go to the program. Soooo, it's something like a soft rejection for all but the lucky few.

These are all great questions! Another one is if they'll get into their top choice (if it wasn't UT). These things are out of our hands. UT is a great school so chances are, it's gonna be hard to say no. LOL And finances won't be the biggest issue because a loan for $10,000 is much better than a loan for $70,000. There's so many factors. Like always, I'm rooting for everyone to get into their top choice and if it was UT, 🎉🎉 (cheers)!

Now, on that note, this application cycle was already as useful as I thought it'd be! We know ourselves as writers and can renew the goals we set for ourselves. Like Rose said, I feel very privileged to have been able to apply!
