AFI 2024 - All Applicants (3 Viewers)

I actually like my story but was on production the 2 weeks before the app was due and let it sneak up on me so I ended up writing it all out less than an hour before it was due. I had to submit without proofreading and that was a mistake cause there are a few egregious errors. Mine was biopic of sorts about Chien-Shiung Wu disproving the Law of Conservation of Parity. She was a part of the Manhattan Project and I figured why not choose something topical and from an overlooked perspective (Female, Chinese-American Physicist) what with Oppenheimer’s success and those types of conversations being open right now.

What was yours? No pressure to answer if you are uncomfortable doing so.
I took mine in a different perspective based on my experience with STEM. I came from applied STEM through blue collar work in mechanics and engineering, which I considered valid for Sloan given I HEAVILY used the scientific method for fixing and repairing things within complex machines. Mine is an original idea but not a high concept one about a slum group of uneducated boys having to rebuild an engine thrown on them by a street racing hustler. I forget much of what makes it high stakes as I didn't keep a record of what I wrote and that was many months ago.

Nice. It sounds like you’ve got more of a STEM background than me. Mine is primarily from an interest/rearing environment background. My dads an engineer who has made ISS components and manages environmental cleanup and storage of chemicals and weapons so I grew up with that in Huntsville, AL which has the largest per capita concentration of engineers in the country and is one of 2 locations with Space Camp, but I never got a degree in the sciences or anything.

I'd actually say quite the opposite - you seem very well vested in STEM! I have a degree in playwriting; I only know a bit of STEM through hands-on blue collar work. No major formal education outside of core requirements from school or STEM circle I was surrounded by. I wonder if they're only looking for "traditional" STEM backgrounds or not - i.e. degrees.

Yeah I had the same thought. It says you don’t have to have a degree in STEM, but seems like they might prefer it. Who knows though. My thinking was just try to get that funding if I can. At least we tried haha. I wonder how many applicants for this funding they get? I guess max they’d only consider ~50 since it’s only open to admitted Screenwriting and Directing fellows but probably a lot less since not everyone is going to submit for it.

Yeah exactly. No reason not to apply if you think you might have a shot. I don't even think the pool will be that large cause that's quite a small academic demographic to apply for screenwriting of all things compared to other typical academic demographics of most applicants.

I had a job interview today so my anxiety is sky high between that and this so sorry to keep bugging everyone haha.

I was wondering if everyone wants to talk about their work? Like what genre/style are you interested in pursuing at AFI and what medium are you hoping to work in Film or Television?

The work I submitted and am the most passionate about is satire with genre elements. So my 20 page sample (I submitted a 16 page short film) was about a woman stuck in an MLM who after an attempted robbery decides to take her career and her literal demon boss’s life into her own hands. I’m currently working on fleshing it out into a 60min pilot and really want to pursue TV though I would also love to write features.

see you all in the morning!
