NYU Tisch Dramatic Writing MFA Fall 2023

Definitely don't give up if you didn't get in! It's a very competitive program. Keep at it and keep creating. There's a very good piece of advice in our Columbia interview with a current student about this:

Q & A With Patrick Clement, Columbia MFA Screenwriting & Directing Student

Q & A With Patrick Clement, Columbia MFA Screenwriting & Directing Student

"I went to Columbia because I wanted to be a better storyteller and understanding structure... and I do think my storytelling has gotten better and more complex and deeper and I'm really grateful to Columbia.... they delivered exactly what I expected them to deliver." Recently I had the...

"I mean not, not to be too esoteric... but I mean aren't we all just kind of floating around in the universe and then eventually we're just going to land where we're supposed to land I think? Honestly like do the footwork... put one foot in front of the other... and we try to stay true and honest and try not to hurt other people...Then eventually we're going to land and go where we were supposed to go... We're not all supposed to Scorsese... So I don't know man. I guess I just, maybe I have a different view of that, but like eventually we ended up where we're supposed to go as long as we keep doing the work. So hopefully kids will take it easy. I mean I think in the age of, you know, a lot of noise with a lot of people are making stuff... even at the top at the top ten film schools it's going to be at least 200 thesis films that come out of those schools every year. Not including short films that are coming out of other places... So there's a lot of noise and a lot of people are trying to get attention so I see why like Film School is just a way to sort of rise above the noise. But it's not the only way and I see a lot of stress from people [on the forums] and I wish they would just sort of not be as stressed about it. It's just life man. Not getting into film school is not the end of the world.

I mean if getting into Grad school is just your goal. You can get into grad school and then what? It's like it's sort of like when a cat tries to catch a bird for the first time... it gets it in it's mouth and it's like wait a minute... I don't know what the fuck to do now. So it's just having a bigger view of your life and your career I think will really help you in the right direction."

Here's another good article on the topic:

So...you’re applying for film school, huh? I mean, that’s just my assumption. Not sure why you would bother reading this otherwise, especially with where we are currently in The Cycle of Applications. These next couple weeks are pretty much when all the major film school programs have their...

I have also been accepted and granted a scholarship!

I submitted a TV pilot.

I have a decision to make between NYU and USC now. I’d have to say I’m leaning USC but if anyone has some more insight on this please help me out.
As a waitlister for NYU...kidding. If I'm you and my choices are USC and NYU I'm following the scholarship money. Congrats!

I think if you are interested in playwriting then NYU is the better choice…but if you know you want to write for film/tv USC’s alumni connections and proximity to the industry can’t be beat.

Congrats! I went to USC for undergrad (not in screenwriting though, media studies). It’s a great program with some pretty cool teachers. The people they invite for events and talks are stellar and the campus itself definitely lives up to the “spoiled kids” reputation. There are so many chances to get work created cause all of the film students are hungry for content to produce! I loved my experience.

This part of the waitlist letter confused me: "The waitlist is not very long, so it is helpful for us to know whether you are interested in remaining on it." Judging by previous years applications it seems that that majority of people who were not admitted got waitlisted so how can this be true?

I feel like it means just comparatively? 😂 I figured it’s maybe just helpful for them to rule out anyone who’s already committed somewhere else/doesn’t want to attend so they don’t waste any time when moving down the list? Lord knows 😂
Yeah haha. And what's their definition of "Not very long"? That could be 10 people or a 100
