I'm so sorry to hear that @ballena100, that could possibly be the worst mistake an admission department has ever made. Thank you so much for documenting your experiences. It will continue to be useful for many years to come and is a hard lesson that must be learned by all parties of the admission process. It was a very fair, level headed account of what happened, and hopefully it encourages admissions to be better and more efficient with their reporting.

On another note, USC is finally taking action on my application (has been blank for a week now), and removed the decision letter from my mailbox. They told me that the issue will hopefully be resolved within 2 days. However, I curiously had saved the original decision notification letter open in another computer and refreshed. In doing so, a PDF finally downloaded, and in it I found a rejection letter. So somehow, the secured link that hadn't worked for a week and that was removed just today, now works by itself. The decision notification has still yet to appear in my you.usc.edu mailbox, but I'm more than 99.9% positive that nothing has changed and that it will show me the same PDF sometime tomorrow or Friday.

I feel more at peace now. Although this process was stressful and confusing, I've finally gotten the closure that I've been waiting for. Thanks to everyone for their encouraging words and support! This forum has been nothing but great. I'm still waiting on NYU, but I'm not as anxious anymore about looking at the result.

Wow. I'm so sorry that happened to you. This has happened to me regarding a film festival once, and it is the utmost worst when you receive a congratulations, and then it is taken away from you. I could only imagine how you felt with a school you really wanted to go to. If it was regarding "lack of funds", they should have figured that out before they gave you a call.

I also think that's extremely unprofessional and you don't deserve that at all. Did you try talking to anyone else from the school?

A lot of people have said I should talk to others from the school, but I feel like I'm not in the right emotional mindset to do that right now. I'm thinking of waiting for a few more days and then trying to find a proper explanation. However, what can they say besides, "It was a mistake"? Do you think it's even worth it?

@ballena100 I'm so sorry this happened to you.. It is one thing I'm aware of that could happen.. Tisch and graduate school are two separate departments and it seems like the latter still have the decision making power over the film school. I don't have a high GPA, so I have a feeling IF I get accepted, i'll have to hold back my excitement until the official letter comes in from the graduate admission. It is horrible.. I hope things will work out for you with other schools.

Hi @seok yep definitely hold out for the official acceptance letter! My mistake was celebrating prematurely. I'm aware this could happen, but it was just so shocking. Thanks for the insight.

BTW folks, I noticed some quirks from NYU's Admissions Office as well. My rejection mail included the standard script + Dear Surname without any salutations, which felt slightly weird...

Apart from that, I sent them a mail asking about how there were no views on my Portfolio Film/Showreel from New York, so I wanted to know what went wrong, and how I could improve my work/application for future.

The next time they responded, the opening was: 'Hi Shushant' (spelled incorrectly in different font than the rest of the body) and said that their policy does not allow anyone to discuss their reasons to not admit an applicant or help the applicant improve their application chances.

Quite a pinch of unprofessionalism from their staff. And at this rate, I don't think I'd want to go to a place that doesn't consider everyone from the application pool. I'm a little bummed as well, but I guess everything will work out towards the end! #hopeful

All this is just infuriating. It's infuriating that schools won't treat applicants with the respect we deserve, especially considering we pay to apply in the first place. I'm so sorry @ballena100 this happened to you and thank you for documenting it. Your file was certainly dealt with a lot of unprofessionalism and a blatant lack of due diligence.

Somebody at admissions emailed me yesterday from nyu asking for another copy of my transcript so now I'm beginning to get worried since I know some other people recieved acceptance calls yesterday. This waiting game is killing me.

I'm also waiting to hear something from NYU and it's killing me! I have no other options... I hope they contact us today or tomorrow... Good Luck!

Hey @jedi578k - I didn't apply to AFI, but a few people have mentioned that decisions are being released on April 4th. It seems like a lot of schools were on a later timeline this year than last, probably due to the number of applicants. Keep your chin up!

Wow thanks for the info, Do you mean all of the diciplines ?
I just saw in the spreadsheet that someone has been asked for interview for AFI's cinematography . Currently I am freaking out lol.

I posted this in the LMU thread, but thought I'd share here as well. After hearing some rejections went out last week and they were arriving beginning of this week, I figured I'd email the SFTV grad email to check on my status. I haven't received any communication from them via phone, email, or snail mail at this point.

This is the response I got
"We are still reviewing applications, a few rejections and acceptances have gone out but the committee is still reviewing. Please hang in there and you will hear from us by April."

So if you have only heard crickets from LMU, you may have hope yet!

@jedi578k I'm not sure what discipline you applied for (I'm a Screenwriting candidate), but the admissions officer who contacted me to take my picture and verify my Skype username 5 mins before my interview, clearly said they'd send out notices on April 4th

Both Emerson and Chapman have soundstages, editing rooms, etc - so they both feel like studio-driven schools (though both encourage location shooting, too, of course). However, Chapman is more of a "conservatory" style, where each person focuses solely on what they were admitted for (directing, writing, etc). At Emerson, the writing program is separate, but the Media Art program seems like it's more well-rounded in terms of the things you focus on. I think that at Chapman, because it's conservatory, some of the screenwriting students will see their films get made by production students, and I haven't heard about that kind of thing at Emerson - but doesn't mean it doesn't happen!

For me, the biggest thing is that the locations are vastly different: LA vs Boston. I love Boston, and there is definitely filmmaking happening here, especially indie stuff, but for the bigger productions, rumor has it that studios hire "above the line" in LA, then hire crew locally. Which is totally fine if you don't like LA and still want to work on sets, just a different vibe. The whole city isn't as enmeshed in the filmmaking culture, which can be a pro or a con! Something to think about as you network, even if you're living elsewhere during the low-residency writing program.

This info is mainly gleaned from my tours of the various schools, but I'm definitely coming at it from more of a production-focus. Hope this is at least a little bit helpful!

@juliabulia - if you could post those thoughts into a review for those schools in the Film School Review section... that would be beyond awesome. (you can review as an applicant)
