CalArts Film Directing MFA

Hello

For some strange reason, there's little or no discussion around here about the Film Directing program at CalArts. Well, I've applied there and it would be great to meet others who have. I received a portfolio receipt confirmation yesterday, but that's about all I've heard from them. Anyone else heard anything?

Also, I'd really appreciate it if you could to share any information/ views you have on the program. Or feedback that you may have received from people you know who have attended the program.

Cheers,

Sudarshan

Hey Sudarshan, I also applied for the Film Directing program. I received the portfolio confirmation last week too and haven't heard anything else from them. Not too sure what's coming up next too.

hi, I also applied this program and just received email about interview. Now i wonder about the internet interview or the face to face interview. it's really hard to choose ! I am in China, should I fly to CA ??????

That's great! Congratulations. I don't think they expect international students to attend the interview in person, especially if you live on the other side of the world. If I were you, I'd opt for a web interview for convenience.

Could you tell me a little more about what the email says and when they're planning to have the interview? Also, do you know if they always interview an applicant before taking a decision or are people also accepted without interviews? Thanks.

Anyone else heard anything from CalArts?

Hello!

I also received an email yesterday about an interview with CalArts for the MFA Film Directing program. I am on the East Coast and I am planning on flying out for it and I am hoping UCLA and Chapman also invite me for an interview... that would be great and would align very well.

I was completely calm after applying and now hearing back is making me a bit nervous/anxious. But I am acknowledging those feelings and believing that I will get into the place that is the best fit for me. I also applied to Columbia College Chicago, Columbia University, NYU, San Fran State and Northwestern.

I've got an interview notification. As I'm an international applicant, I'm doing it through Skype. Anyone requested for a Skype interview too?

I'm from Singapore. But I'm not sure if they're still in the process of scheduling the interviews etc, so maybe they still are.

I was wondering the same thing...but I'm guessing there's not much to the interview preparation other than just focusing on how your creative instincts/intuition lead you in certain situations and being confident with it. Any kind of "Don't worry about it, be yourself...but probably have this in your corner__________" kind of responses would be more than appreciated to ease these worrisome tendencies .

I've been accepted to Emerson's MFA Media Art program and now I have an interview with CalARTS (My top two choices...thankfully enough)...but still looking for any tips from current/former students in regards to the interview process as well.

You are right, I just wondering what kind of questions they may ask, like "what's your favourite movie? Which director do you adore?" something like this.......I just felt like I should do something before I go to California..Are you going to interview on campus?

I haven't heard a word from CalArts yet. Can I ask when you'll submitted your applications? Was it by the early deadline or the regular deadline? Thanks and all the best for your interviews.

I really feel they'll try to find more a "scope" for creative processes...like Where you get certain inspirations from (i.e. galleries, music, life experience) while diving into certain scenarios where collaboration is key. I'm just assuming that because prior experience isn't necessarily a requirement for the program, that they'll focus on everything BUT our favorite films. I could be totally wrong, but it's just a hunch.

I'm flying in on the 6th, go to classes on the 7th and then be a part of that big 'ole interview thing on the 8th. Still nailing down the places to stay, but I'm excited none-the-less!

Hi, has anybody had the interview already? I just had mine. I just wonder why they just asked me only one question, why I choose Calarts, no more questions.... I only used about 2 minutes answering it and then, they asked me if I have any questions for them... anybody has the same situation? btw, I had my interview through Skype.

I'm in Beijing, too. I will finish my interview via skype in tomorrow mid-night. My qq is 179356744. Hope we can chat about the application and be a friend in future.Good luck.

you guys are so lucky! I just finished my interview via Skype. Lots of questions, such as why calarts, favorite movie and director influence me. And something else about my internship in crew. It's took about 30 mins. You really going to have a wonderful day in calarts before ur interview. Envy about that...
Hope we can meet each other one day.
