Hi Friends,

I had applied to FSU for the Grad program in Film production and they have shortlisted me for their personal interviews. I am an international student from India and will be interviewed on phone on 10th March.

Do we have any grad students from FSU?

Can u tell me in what dimension is the interview conducted? I have read a bit about the school culture from the Film School confidential book. but if there can be any more help i would be thankful.

Also i have got an admit from the University of Miami. But in the email they have not specified of any funding. Any miami students know of what it means??

Please help.

I'm currently an undergrad film major at Miami. The School of Communication is actually very highly ranked (I believe top 3 or 5 in the nation) but the film major itself is not considered elite for a couple reasons. The main one is that if you are accepted to UM, you can choose to be a film major. There is no separate application to get into film school, and anyone can change their major to film at any time. This results in a lot of people who aren't serious about it being in there, and a close-knit film community is almost non-existant.

On the good side, the faculty is solid, the equipment is on par with what you'd find at most places, and they are opening a new building for the Com School next year. Also, the new dean of the Com School is Sam Grogg, former dean at AFI, who obviously will be somewhat biased towards bettering the film program.

I would recommend this as a mid-level grad program where you will have access to plenty of equipment and resources to make a good thesis film if you can. It's not NYU/USC/AFI, but nothing's stopping you from making just as good a film as anyone at those schools, and ultimately that's what will get you into festivals and help you build a reel.
