NYU Tisch Dramatic Writing MFA Fall 2023

Well I hope we both get off the waitlist! I honestly wonder if they had decided to waitlist me before the interview. Robin, my interviewer, made a big point at the end of my interview about pursuing the waitlist if I’m interested and that people get in off of it. And about the USC thing…I just meant you have a really good option if NYU doesn’t work out. A lot of people pass up NYU for USC and honestly California is way better for film/tv. Also, I emailed the admissions officer to find out what the scholarship situation is for those admitted off the waitlist. I will report back. I’d love to go to NYU, but I can’t justify going anywhere for 70 grand a year out of pocket. Trying not to be in debt for the rest of my life!
We've not heard anything about scholarships yet so... 😬 but also NYU was kind of my dream school haha. I applied for Fall 2021 and was rejected without an interview so I'm honestly just happy to have got this far 🥹

Also if any waitlistees are wondering about scholarships here’s the info:

Hi John,

Thank you for reaching out. Waitlisted applicants are still eligible for scholarships through the department. Basically, if an admitted student that was awarded a scholarship declines the offer, their scholarship funds go back into the available pool of aid and are redistributed to WL applicants accepted off the list. So while not guaranteed, most students do receive aid.

The distribution of aid is up to the discretion of the department, and based off many factors, so it’s hard to say how much will ultimately be awarded to WL. But it is not inherently less than what is given to the initial wave of accepted students.

Please let me know if you have any other questions.

Best,
Peter

Me too!! Oh really?? I'm sure that wasn't the case because I think all the interviews are conducted before they sit down and discuss who they want but maybe they interviewed more people this year? My interviewer spoke a lot about scholarships and how they didn't have a lot and she specifically said 'we don't have any full-ride scholarships, unlike other schools' so... yeah. USC is a great option (I'm very grateful and also shocked that I was accepted) but without a scholarship I just won't be able to attend as there's no good loan options for us international students 🥲 Thank you for the NYU waitlist scholarship email update! It's good to know that it is still possible to get a scholarship if you're accepted off the waitlist🤞

This is exactly my issue. I'm also from the UK and just hitting brick walls on how to get funding for the MFA at the moment. I was going to try Fullbright but you have to apply the year before you apply to schools? This doesn't make sense to me as they could award funding to someone who then doesn't get in and it's totally my mistake for misreading it but I'm kinda bummed as I was hoping that could cover a lot of it. Have you found any other funding sources that are still open? I'm waiting to hear about scholarships but I'm still terrified at the cost as an international!

Don't even get me started on the Fulbright situation! The first year I applied (2020 for Fall 2021), the application was due that October which made total sense because it's around the same time the uni apps are due. Then I went on to the website in May 2022 to get the deadline date for Fall 2023 in my calendar and there was already a notice saying that the applications for Fall 2023 were closed! I sent them an email about it to confirm that it wasn't a mistake and they said it wasn't... I did send them a bit of a strongly worded email expressing how unfair it seemed lol. So yeah, basically there's not really a lot of options without a scholarship from the school itself. You can look into local stuff, I think the Prince's trust has a link to local organisations that you could contact to see if they have anything available? I know my nephew got some money that way for his course at ArtsEd.

Oh my god, I am SO glad you've said that. I could've sworn that when first went on it around the 2020/21 time and saw it shut in the autumn but I couldn't find any info about it and I've been beating myself up about it for the last few months. It really sucks but I'm glad it's not just me that's been confused by them! It really is unfair that they changed it so much, especially as that's the only real major funding in the UK. I'll definitely have a look at the Prince's Trust things, it's driving me nuts. I really hope it all works out for you with funding too!

Is anyone else still waiting to hear from USC?
Also, there seems to be a lot of us waitlisted for NYU, how do they pick off the waitlist?
