I did not submit my application in the end, i realized USC is the only place I want to go for grad school.

Hi Max,

You mention in your post that you received an e-mail from UCLA offering you an interview for their producing program? I actually did not realize that UCLA offers interviews like AFI in order to be accepted. I therefore am crossing my fingers! I actually went ahead and set up a phone interview with one of the heads of the producers program back when I was applying in October, so I wonder if that counts towards my application. I'm so excited to hear back! I also applied to USC, AFI, Chapman and Columbia University for Producing.

Congrats Max on getting an interview with UCLA. I hope to get an invitation, but am really holding onto hope for USC.

Witt, I figured Stark would get a lot of apps. There are a lot of people in the industry who are out of work right now. It would not surprise me to find that some of them would want to go back to school until things pick up again. But even in a year when apps are low, its still a statistical rarity to get into Stark, or any of the producing programs for that matter.

That said, we just have to keep believing that our applications will stand out (for whatever unique reasons) and that we will be one of the 25.

Save managing a video store for two years, almost being cast on a TV show, and my film minor during undergrad, I have zero film experience. But I am a bit older, 34, have a lot of creative experience in marketing, have a 3.80 GPA and 1130 GRE, and by the end of the spring I'll have an MBA. Plus, I have a tremendous passion for the industry. I read Variety, the Reporter, and Deadline every day. I can think of no other profession I'd rather do than to be a development exec for one of the major studios. If I don't get into any of the programs, I'll work as a PA until I get into one of the studios. One way or another, I'll make it happen. This is what I tried to convey in my application--hopefully it is different and compelling enough to get a spot, but who knows.

In the end, I believe in positive outcomes only.

They probably get a ton of very good applicants and somehow have to wittle it down to 25. Don't count yourself out and/or get depressed though. RJDee, thanks for the congratulations. I was honestly totally shocked when they contacted me. UCLA's producing program is probably even tougher to get into than Stark (they take all their applications, narrow it down to 30, then interview the 30, and then select approximately 15, so Stark takes 10 more students per year, but also probably gets more applications). Hold out hope though guys because I believe that this is an incredibly down year for applications due to the economy. I know we've heard that people are going back to school because of the economy, but for the kind of things we're applying for, they may be but in much smaller numbers. I've heard that applications to liberal arts schools are down dramatically. AFI pushed back the deadline for applying to their producing program from Dec. 1st to May 15th, almost certainly due to too few applications. Even USC's Stark application page changed some of their wording which makes it seem as though they got a lot less applications this year. We've all still got a good shot.

Even with the surprise interview, USC is still my top choice and if I get in, I'm definitely going.

I didn't apply to the Stark program but I'm just curious as to what you specifically mean when you say that Stark "changed some of their wording which makes it seem as though they got a lot less applications this year." (sorry for the double quotes but narrowing down a longish post)

I know you're probably going on memory, but have any specifics?

Hi everyone! My name is Allie and I am in with you for the long wait...I found this website and your post about peter stark and felt so relieved! People like me who are going through the same excruciating process, and sharing it! I already love you guys. I applied to the PS for the second time - last year I was waitlisted - and I have been dreaming of getting in since I was 10 years old. I come from Milan, Italy, and I moved to LA in August. I have a BSc in Econ and Management of Arts and Culture that I obtained last June and there is only one thing I picture myself doing in the future: produce, produce, produce! I am a film fan, but most of all a fan of the process that brings to the creation of a film.

I noticed the change in the USC website phrasing too...I have no idea what it really means (if it does mean something), but it's making me jump every time I hear my phone ring. I am trying to keep my days busy - I am studying for a Producing certificate to keep me up to date - reading books, watching films from my 100 must-see films and going to the gym to release the tension.

I wish all of you good luck, or as we say in Italy "in bocca al lupo!", which means "in the mouth of the wolf" - I have no idea why we really say that, but that's it.

I'll be here, waiting with you, feeling a little more understood (people around me don't really get the significance of it all...)

I'm still following this thread even though I applied to film & television production-- I suppose in hopes that if you guys hear news about Stark, then news about the other USC MFA programs surely is on the way.

Allie, I bet that saying refers to Romulus and Remus, the founders of Rome, being saved by the she-wolf when they were exposed and left to die as infants. She took their basket in her mouth, carried them to her den and suckled them. Seems lucky enough. Is that where it came from? Oh, and welcome to the board!
