Peter Stark Program 2010

whoah! seems like we have a pretty international group of people here! Tokyo is the city i'm dying to go but been missing a couple of chances. All my Japanese friends say that I'm made for Harajuku and Shinjuku!

oh btw, ??????????

Witt, so you are Australian? which part of Australia are you from?

Nice to meet you Max!

My thesis focuses on the tragic side of Chaplin's films, how he made it possible to be both comical and tragic at the same time. I made a scene-to-scene analysis on "City Lights", and wrote how the narrative structure works, how the character of the "tramp" can be accepted both comic and tragic, referring to Aristotle's "Poetics" and other works on comedy and tragedy.
I guess that's the gist of it.

Yea I think I read somewhere that "Annie Hall" is parallel to "City Lights" and the two have many more points they resemble to each other. Very very interesting.

Cheers :-)

Hey Witt,

Didn't know they teach Japanese in high school in Australia! I've met several Australian exchange students at university and god how fluent they were in the language! Waaay better than any Japanese student could ever handle English...lol

I'm sure you'll have the opportunity to come to Japan soon! Maybe on a vacation, or maybe for a film shoot(!) We'll see...

Regarding the language, yes, for me it would be much easier to communicate in Japanese, but maybe not for the other viewers? In this forum, I thought I'd just follow the forum's rules :)

Still a long waiting period ahead of us, huh. Oh btw, the results are given by end of February, right??

Hi Witt,

I only had a little of Brisbane during my trip to Gold Coast! I'm more familiar with Sydney and Perth though, because I have family there :) I probably should go back to australia soon again!

Hey Kane!

Cindy, your project's really amazing! I like the concept and it really gives me the concrete image of the finished film :) Congratulations for the successful funding and good luck with the project!

Btw guys, have you seen this video? It's a compilation video of films released in 2010, and it's so cool!!! I've watched it more than 10 times today, and it's extremely inspiring. Wonderful editing and choice of music.

Thought it would be nice to look back at this year in film :)

Cheers,
Kane

Heh, ` 623 Productions `, I was reading the thread for the same reason. Nostalgia, nostalgia.

You all seem very interesting by the way, hope you make it and we get to work together.

Hi Fellow Hopeful Starkies,

My name is Ryan from sunny San Diego. I was so glad to find this discussion thread. It's nice to know I'm not the only one sweating while waiting to hear if I'm going to be a Starkie this fall. According to the USC Web site, all decisions for the program will be made by Feb. 23 and the lucky 25 will be notfied by phone. I hope they keep to this timeline. I don't know how much longer I can stand the suspense. Good luck to everyone and I hope to be seeing some of you in the fall!

Oh, and one other thing I forgot to mention. I interviewed in-person with Richard Shepherd, the director of the Stark program, last July. To call it an interview would be a misnomer. It was really more of an informal chat for me to ask questions about the program and for him to ask me why I thought the Stark program would be a good place for me. It lasted well over an hour even though it felt like it was fifteen minutes. In fact, I was surprised he let me ramble on for that amount of time. I don't know if interviewing in-person helped my chances. I don't see how it could have hurt and I was glad I did it. After taking the tour of SCA and the talk with Richard, I knew I wanted to be Starkie.

Did anyone else interview or take the tour? I'd like to hear any other stories you all might have.

Thanks, Witt!

I've applied to UCLA as well but have not visited the campus. I have heard it is even more spectacular than USC. I would be incredibly lucky to be accepted by that program as well and certainly wouldn't turn them down if USC said "no". I am also in the middle of getting my writing samples together for Chapman. I've been dragging my feet on that one since the priority deadline isn't until next month. I've also been in the middle of finishing my MBA. I graduate (again) this spring. Hopefully, if all goes well, I will be in school this fall (again) at either USC, UCLA, or Chapman. I even work on a college campus--apparently I just can't get enough of university life.

Max, thanks for the welcome. I'm getting my MBA from Colorado State University. It's a distance program that's allowing me to work full-time while I save up for USC.

Hi everyone,

I just checked in the forum and read about this amazing thread. You guys are very impressive. That makes me very nervous about my application. I applied to Peter Stark as well. I also applied to UCLA, AFI, and NYU. I'm polishing up my NYU - MBA application.

Anyhow, glad to read through the posts and know a bit about everyone. Best of luck!
