UCLA MFA Production/Directing Fall 2023

I applied for Directing. Still haven't heard anything and have sort of shrug it off as not getting in. Gives me a little hope to see some folks are still receiving interview invitation. Checking Spam everyday lol. What is the title on the email? Is it just UCLA interview?

I don’t think anybody’s heard for directing/production. Just the two who applied for documentary.

It might vary for different emphasis, but for documentary, the email title is “UCLA MFA DOCUMENTARY INTERVIEW REQUEST”.

Hi y’all I just finished my documentary program interview and would like to share a bit about this. My interviewers were Steve Anderson and Kristy Guevara-Flanagan. There’s a third faculty in the meeting who never showed their face or voice. The interview lasted about 20 minutes.

Here’s what they sent you via email: update the committee on your activities since submitting your written application late last year. The atmosphere is intended to be casual so you can share your views on filmmaking and your creative journey. Please come ready for an engaging conversation. For the Documentary program, please prepare a documentary pitch for a short film that you could make while at UCLA.

At the end they covered most prompts, although the wording was different. When I mentioned a photo project I created, they asked me more about it, like why it mattered to me and how I researched the topic. For the pitch, they asked me to do one that’s different from the one I already submitted. Some other things they asked were:
  • Who are some documentary directors that inspired you?
  • Why do you want to study documentary filmmaking?
  • Why do you want to study in UCLA?
Overall, we had a very engaging conversation. I’m unsure how I did, but Steve was encouraging nonetheless. One tip is to be as early as they asked you to be. In my case they asked me to log on zoom 20min earlier than my interview time (via email). Good luck all!!

Hi ! Just got my recommendation of admittance, so very excited and happy.

Might not say yes to it though because I have another school in mind depending on if I’m accepted there or not !

Also I have 1 month and half to give a final answer.

Hope it will go fine for all of you !
