2016 Interviews- Acceptances- Rejections

I need to stop reading all of these acceptances, it's causing me more stress and anxiety. I'm just waiting for one program, LMU(writing for the screen) and many were already accepted this week. I've been jumping every time my phone makes the slightest noise. I am LITERALLY going to go crazy if I don't hear anything soon...or if I don't get accepted.

I just got accepted to NYU Dramatic Writing! It's a great program, and it's a total honor to be invited.

This is such a great day! Congratulations, Boethius!

I feel you @LilyMunster. I'm in the same boat. I applied to AFI and they are still reviewing applications and scheduling interviews. I have stress nightmares every night. I'm obsessed with the phone. I turn it on and off to make sure that it's receiving a signal. I sent a message to AFI asking when they were sending out rejections and they told me to "be optimistic". Optimism was February. It's March...I'm ready for reality.

If no one has gotten an admit, then no news sounds like good news for you! Keep your thoughts positive. Still reviewing and scheduling things is a good sign.

I had my Northwestern interview (Writing for the Screen and Stage program) today. I felt it went pretty well considering I was a bundle of nerves and students only get ten minutes to chat with 5 faculty members as a group. I am very hopeful that the faculty will consider me a good candidate. :)

Questions I was asked include:

How do you see yourself as a writer or how would you describe yourself as a writer? (I'm paraphrasing, but this was the gist of the question. This was the first question asked).

Are there any books, plays, or movies that are especially meaningful to you?

How do you see yourself in a workshop environment where you maybe get feedback that isn't so good or have to give feedback like that? (I was glad one professor asked this because I'm a fiction editor who has had multiple partners that give critique on my work and vice versa. I was happy with my answer even though this wasn't a question I had prepared for)

Have you written a complete screenplay?

The faculty member who asked this seemed satisfied with my answer and said it isn't unusual for their program's students to NOT have written a complete screenplay yet and to have focused on other mediums like the teleplay, fiction, or play. It was just something they ask or want to know to learn about the applicant.

Congrats to everyone who received an acceptance today! :)

Now I'm freaking out bc USC has already accepted three of our forum writers and I have heard nothing :(

I feel your pain because I didn't hear anything either and there's no change on my YOUSC account. It's hard not to wonder if my creative essay/personal statement was "too different" or unusual, or if I did something else that the folks reading the apps didn't care for....

Exactly. I'm second guessing everything I sent them because it was the first application I submitted, and it was radically different from what Columbia and AFI got (and those two so far at least contacted me for interviews)...

No news is definitely good news as far as USC's W4ST MFA. There's still a deadline for admitted students to accept or consider other acceptances, and then the waitlist, which is almost always tapped for acceptance. Last year a girl in my cohort was accepted off the waitlist the Friday before class started and had to drop everything and leave Chicago to start.

It's not over till it's over! :)

USC was the first application I submitted as well and had different requirements than some others, so I had similar thoughts about second guessing what I sent them. I'm crossing my fingers we both hear something soon!

That's good to hear, Point Break! Thanks for chiming in and sharing that. I am hoping I hear back from USC soon enough that I'm sure about what programs have accepted/rejected me before I have to make a decision. :)

I believe rejections are send out first and if we've heard nothing yet, then it means we are still in the running. Hang in there everybody... we got this!

I'm not an incredibly tech-savvy person, so I'm not sure how to do this myself (and I wouldn't want to without a consensus from other members), but it might be nice to add an additional option on the google spreadsheet in the 'Status' column that says "Attending" so people can update to that as they decide which school they're attending. It would be cool to see where everyone ends up ...

Checked and it was beyond my capabilities. Granted I did not spend too much time tinkering around this time. One option would to bold the text line of the school one ends up enrolling to? That atleast would be easy to do and easy to spot while skimming through the spreadaheet.

I think I can do it, if you don't mind me trying?

Oh I did it! We now have an option to list ourselves as attending in the spreadsheet. The color it shows up as is blue, to differentiate from those who were admitted.
