AFI 2024 - All Applicants (1 Viewer)

Thank you! I got in for editing but can't attend without any scholarship. At least it will give someone on the waitlist a spot. How about you?
Screenwriting. I am thinking I’ll still attend, but also can’t really afford it. Dealing with a lot of fear about it though. It feels really wild to have a relatively stable life and job and to throw that away for instability and uncertainty. I believe this will help me and my spouse with achieving our goals in the long term, but then I’m like “Oh shit what if I make us homeless or miserable or worse?!”

So what are you thinking in terms of attending? I see you got in to UT and that you mentioned it being your dream program. So I assume you’re gonna do that but curious. I’m still probably attending but it does freak me out just a bit.
I’m actually visiting Austin for Admitted fellows day this week. They’re one of the cheapest programs and they gave me a really good deal. $80k+ vs around $5k a year is a no brainier to me.

Hey everyone, congratulations on your acceptances! I have a quick question, seeing as some of you received scholarship emails yesterday. I didn't get an email, however, I did fill out the scholarship application a few months ago. Can any of you tell me if you got a confirmation email after filling out the scholarship application? Because I can't seem to find one in my inbox, and now I'm stressing that I may have missed something on the application or filled it out incorrectly.

Also, is there anyone else here who hasn't received a scholarship email yet despite filling out the application? Because that would make me feel a bit better about not getting an email yesterday, so hopefully we can still be expecting one.

Thank you!

Congrats! Maybe just reach out to financial aid directly and see? From what I can tell it all got sent out but who knows, really?

I feel you. With the recent strikes it makes it feel more unstable. I'm surprised that only one person in this thread got a scholarship. It looks like they have been more generous in past years. But that's really cool that your spouse is also a filmmaker! Are you both attending?

Just wondering if anyone is planning to decline in directing (an anxious waitlister here 😣 ( I have a scholarship that requires me to make my final decision by mid-April so I am eager to know if I still have a chance...

Did you receive a phone call?
Yes. I got a call from Burbank today and was like huh that’s weird but it’s probably nothing. If it’s something they’ll leave a message, and they didn’t but then they called again a few hours later and did leave a message and it was one of my interviewers. It was their personal phone number too.

Did you get one too? Just trying to gauge if this is normal. It feels like it could go either way.

Was the voicemail about scholarship?

I am an waitlisted and wondering if anyone is going to decline in Producing? I need to apply to scholarship very very soon 🥹

No. It was her calling me to check in basically. It was her saying she really hopes to see me there and also to mention that she and Michael were big advocates for me in the admissions process and to call her back if I’d like. It was very sweet and it also sorta broke my brain.

My two cents here is probably worth as much as a handful of magic beans, but I would definitely take it as an incredible thing. While I can only assume that everyone who was accepted (and even waitlisted) would have enough talent to attend, they must come across the odd application that blows them away, and I would guess that yours was one here.

As for attending or not - and again no one asked for my opinion but I’ll give it anyway - as someone who has left a stable job to chase a dream before (and one that didn’t end up being all I had hoped), I can confidently say that I didn’t regret it. If you are anything like me you’d regret not trying more than taking the sensible route. But either way, I’m sure you’ll smash it.

Sorry I somehow missed this. He applied for the directing track but didn’t hear back and ended up getting a rejection. So it’s just me, but we currently work together in advertising for a major grocery retailer.

Just got off the phone with my interviewer whose call I missed. For those who didn’t get scholarships (myself included) she told me that this year in particular was really bad for scholarship money and that they didn’t have much to give anyone especially in screenwriting. But that they are working with the unions to try to negotiate something to help fund future fellows because that’s the only way they’re going to be able to pull in talented and diverse applicants. So just know it wasn’t you. They probably wanted to fund you but they didn’t have the money this year.

Oh wow that doesn’t surprise me. The whole industry has been struggling here in LA over the last year so money is scarce I guess. Have you accepted the admission and submitted anything yet?
