NFTS 2024 - Directing Fiction Applications

That's a bummer that it's appears to be a canned email and not at all applicable to what your portfolio is. :(

Although if memory serves me correct they sent a similar email last year. I'm sure they're trying to fill the class.

I'm really glad you liked the short term program though!

Filmmaking Certificate. 6 month course that ends in 6 day residential full of workshops. Its been a lot of fun!
Hi @patchoooli it's been a while since I've seen your post on this forum. Anyway I noticed you attended the filmmaking certificate course and I wanted to know if it was worth it. Also seeing as the course is mostly online with a 5 / 6 day residential after the course, I was wondering how the students would be able to practice what they've just learned on zoom within the 6 month duration of the course. Are there no practical / hands-on training until the 5 day residential?

Hey everyone. Sorry for the gap in my chatting. I did the Summer Three week Directing intensive at London Film School directly following my Screenwriting MA there and it was AWESOME! I highly recommend to anyone. Highly collaborative and ALL industry department folks were from NFTS! Ha. As you know I didn't get into the Directing Fiction after my application and was not asked to interview either. I have been in touch and plan to do the six month certificate course per patchouli's recommendation from your participation in it this past year! Next intake is Jan/Feb 2024. Currently I'm finishing my final course for my 2 year Producing for Film and TV certificate at NYU and super stoked to finally be wrapping it up.
I just got an email from NFTS saying:
"We are very sorry you were unsuccessful for our Directing Fiction MA. Having reviewed your application, we thought we might reach out to you with a suggestion for a slightly different course which might still appeal to you and your career goals.
Our Directing and Producing Television Entertainment MA is a similar course, with an outstanding reputation within the industry and excellent career prospects. We run our course like a production company – we are either in pre-production, shooting or in post-production – where you will be pitching, producing and directing your own TV show. In recent years, our students have sold entertainment formats to Warner Bros. and ITV, and graduation projects have won prestigious awards from the New York Television Festival and the Royal Television Society."
Anyone know anything about this program? is this their standard "let's try to sell/fill our other programs" email? Anyone else receive this? Glad everyone's interviews were a success whether you were offered places or not. I like reading the positive feedback of your experiences.
cheerio!
Hi @pdkjr I noticed you were/are also interested in the six month filmmaking course. Did you go on to register for the course?

Hi. Yes I applied. I have an interview for the six month filmmaking course today fingers crossed*** Did you also apply?
I want to apply actually. I had a phone call with someone from the NFTS yesterday and she was really helpful but some area's still wasn't clear to me. For example, the course is mostly online with a 5 / 6 day residential after the course, I was wondering how the students would be able to practice what they've just learned on zoom within the 6 month duration of the course. Are there no practical / hands-on training until the 5 day residential?

So sorry i totally missed this! Hopefully you applied and have done the course now! I really enjoyed it and got a lot from it. When are you ever going to get the chance to be taught and ask questions by very established people working in the industry. And your colleagues on zoom are placed worldwide, some of whom come over for the residential. Great fun! Yes you get assignments including writing a short and group projects when you have to shoot a mini film for the directing element, production design tasks, budgeting tasks. You get two goes at pitching and creating pitch docs as a team and finally you get to shoot a scene from your film at the school which is screened in the cinema and you receive constructive feedback.
As with all things creative, you get from the course what you put in. If you take all the assignments seriously and do your best work, you’ll get the most out of it. And it will make you stand out. People who dont show up or do their share of work hold themselves back and ultimately the team they are assigned with for each assignment, so dive in and work hard. Its a great opportunity to learn from working pros. It really took me to the next level and is continuing to do so. Sorry for being a year late with the reply. But if anyone else is thinking of it, go for it. Feel free to shout if you have any more questions.
