NYU Tisch Graduate Film 2024 - Who's applying?

Hi friends, new to the forum (just made an account today, but I've been reading these forums like crazy the last 3-4 days!).

Has anyone heard back about an interview? I have received invitations to interview from all of my other schools except NYU... Do we really think no interview means no admittance? Is it true it's only 36 students? I saw a post on here where someone said it's actually 50.......

Hi there, I was lurking in the shadows but I saw your message and thought of providing my grain of salt. I've watched most of the NYU Grad Film posts and some of them I've reread multiple times. I've come up with some conclusions after that and I want to share them with you and see if they give you a little hope (it works for me, I haven't received an interview notification either).

So, according to past years, they ALWAYS send the interviews on two different dates. Usually, one on Friday and then continuing on Monday (because they don't work on weekends). But last year and some other year they started mid-week. Last year, they started on Tuesday (the 7th) and finished on Wednesday (8th).

Here's the thing, according to that pattern they should've sent the rest of the applications on Tuesday this week, but I think they haven't. I don't have any evidence, but I find it weird that NOT ONE PERSON said that they received an invitation on Tuesday. Seeing that they were looking at some short films on the 28th-29th of January, and they sent the first interviews so early, maybe they're waiting to end this week, or send the rest next Monday. But that's just me guessing according to what I've read.

Or maybe it could be possible that they decided to send all of their invitations on one date for once, but I don't want to believe that, so I won't.

Anyway, sorry for my long answer but I really wanted to ease your mind and anyone who's feeling like that. I know it's hard, but, let's keep a little hope! :)
Thank you for this!

Hi! I can confirm it is definitely 36 students who are admitted and I’ve never heard of anyone getting admitted without an interview. I’ve applied with ‘deferred entry’ from my admission last year because I was seriously unwell and had to drop out before going, and I’m interviewing again.

Hi all,

Don’t know if any of this will be helpful. I’m a current first year at NYU.

Each cohort is comprised of 36 people. I can’t speak on the dates of interviews, if it helps, last year I received my notification on February 8.

If you get to the interview stage, it’s a big deal. Last year there were over 2,000 applicants for 36 spots.

Basically now they’re just trying to see if you would be a good fit for the program, personality wise, adaptability, etc. At this point, your work has already spoken for you, so it’s not just about your work.

Basically, the semi finalists are like 3 possibly combinations of cohorts. They interview everyone and decide who would be the best fit for the cohort overall, how everyone will mesh. My cohort is a mix of people who have industry experience and those who have never picked up a camera.

In your interview, it will be the chair, and two other faculty members. From what I’ve heard, one of the faculty members really wants you there, the other is skeptical, you won’t know who it is. But at least you know there’s someone there rooting for you.

Hope this helps and good luck, home to see you in the halls next semester.

Do you have any insight on the admission process, statistics, and cohort size for the graduate Cinema Studies program?

Hi, you have any idea what the undergrad numbers are for applications vs admits?

Hello. Long time lurker of this thread, first time responder. Thank you for this insightful answer. I found it very helpful.

Would you mind sharing your thoughts on what makes someone a good fit for the program? Or what you think the faculty is looking for in a cohort, beyond the applicant’s work?

First time posting! Have been lurking for a bit—thanks to everyone for their insight and general info.
I had a theory that because NYU had technical difficulties toward the end of the applications, that maybe this has somehow affected the second rolling out of interviews? Idk, just a thought.
Additionally—does anyone have any ideas or guesses on when we should assume we won’t be getting an interview at all?
My guess would have been that if we haven’t heard by now, then we probably won’t… but I’m hopeful for at least another week.

Has anyone noticed there are far less applicants on this website saying they have got interview requests than last year? I am wondering whether this is because applicants are visiting this website less or many interview requests have not already been sent out?

I told myself Monday, the 19th haha

Does anyone have info about the interview itself from past years?

If not, how are people prepping for their interview?
Yes there's a ton of info in previous year's threads:

Also tons of info in past applications in the database.

And check out stats:

It seems like no one received an interview after Feb 5th.
Yeah I was thinking the same thing too. And they usually do two rounds of sending out interview requests. Maybe there will be a second batch sent out some time this month? Not sure why the delay but it seems like this year's process is going differently than years past. Maybe they made a change in process/procedure or there were some technical errors, who knows. 🤷🏻‍♀️ a teeny bit of hope is still alive for me that they might send out another round of requests lol

Nothing on my end too!

Congrats to everyone who got an interview!!

This was me the week of Feb 5th lol - but now I'm wondering what I could do better for next year, if I want to apply to more schools and or if film school is even right for me.

In terms of the interview batches - not to be a downer but I feel like past years were in two batches because the first was for international (specifically for those in Asia) and then the second was for the rest of the world (U.S last) to accommodate diff time zones. From the looks of things this year, it seems like they did everything in one batch seeing as how everyone who got an interview on the 5th are from Asia, Europe and the U.S.

Moving forward - if I'm understanding how a rolling process should work, it looks like more interviews will be sent out if they don't find a good fit with some of their current crop. So it makes sense that their interview's would technically 'roll' into mid-March if they go through interviewing their selected finalists through the end of Feb. But the chances do feel a bit slim overall as I remember reading that no-one in these forums in the past have gotten an interview from the rolling process.

I feel like Tisch would save applicants a lot of distress if they delineated and sent out notifications to the outright rejected from the selected finalists - like how a lot of schools do.

I'd also love to share my application materials on here or privately to get feedback from those who have made it (or anyone) - if interested - but I'm also kind of shy about it :I

Was NYU the only school you applied at? That sounds like a risky gambit given the prestige of the University.
