post interview thank you note

Hello,

Did you send out a hand written thank you note after your interview? Is this important? Is an email better?

The interview was 3 weeks ago. I know they just did the 2nd round of interviewing and will be deciding in the next 2 weeks.

Any thoughts?

If you have contact info, it can't hurt as long as it's short and sweet - definitely don't use it as an extra space to expand on why you're so great. Just mention how much you enjoyed chatting, how the program seems like a great fit, and thank them for their time.

That said, for my 3 interviews I didn't have any contact info - the schools didn't give me email addresses or even full names of the professors for some of them - so I didn't write thank yous. I thought about it, but decided it would be stalkerish to try to find info that wasn't provided to me, and left it at that. Of the three schools I interviewed at, I have been admitted to two and waiting on one more, so it's definitely possible to get in without writing them! I honestly don't think they're expected the same way they are for job interviews, etc.

Best of luck!
