2015 Interviews - Acceptances - Rejections (2 Viewers)

How did you find out about your rejections from LMU and Chapman, if you don't mind me asking?
I am kind of curious about this as well. Chapman's process is a mystery to me. Some people have been accepted as far back as the beginning of last month, and some not accepted, but it's all over the map. Someone posted just a couple of days ago that they got an acceptance phone call.

I've kind of resigned myself to Chapman as a "not accepted" but I have yet to receive notification. Film Production Applicant here.

Fantastic! Congratulations! :D I also applied for Scholarship, but whether or not I got it was not stated in my email? But aside from AFI and SCAD we applied to the same schools, and had the same results haha :) So you've decided on LMU then, unless you get accepted by AFI? Good luck :)

@Caroline_Eleni
Thank you! Congratulations to you too! :D Haha yes! We have pretty much applied to the same schools! :)
If I get into AFI I guess I would be more keen on taking up AFI. Even with USC and NYU on the list, AFI has always been my top choice. So *Fingers crossed* Let's see! April 1st is fast approaching!

RE: L.A. as a city, I've had a roller coaster ride of emotions about this place. I was in love with the idea of it in middle school, then in high school I thought I'd for sure go to school/live forever in NYC, but I came out to L.A. for undergrad. Freshman year, I liked it. Sophomore year I was indifferent. The summer after sophomore year, I interned in NYC and actually lived there for the first time, instead of just visiting. Junior year, I hated L.A., and resented it for not being New York. By senior year, I fell unapologetically in love with this city. At least once a week I stop in my tracks and think, "My GOSH, L.A. is a magical place." It's not New York (or London or Hong Kong or any other place), and it never will be, but it's such a huge and diverse city that if you want, you can find a pocket of L.A. somewhere that reminds you of somewhere else and play pretend for a day. L.A. certainly has its share of "shiny pretty people" and somewhat out-there crunchy granola types, but it's also a huge, wonderful place that has so much going on that you don't ever have to be surrounded by all of that—it's easy to immerse yourself in a community that's healthier for your well-being, or more attuned to your wavelength.

It's also the home of "Hollywood," at least on a corporate level. Not necessarily for production as much any more (at least for movies—plenty of TV shows still film here though), but as far as I can tell, pretty much all of the hiring for major positions on set and behind the scenes is done out of L.A. So just from a hiring perspective alone, to my mind it makes the most sense to go to school and develop your professional network in the city where your future bosses work.

If you want to go less corporate/studio and more indie, then I think it might be a toss-up between New York and L.A.—so choose the city that fits your vibe more. But both cities have so much going on that you should be able to find a part of New York or L.A. that you love. :)

That being said, I think if you're looking to start a career in film outside of L.A. and New York, Vancouver, Atlanta, New Orleans, and Toronto all seem like good places to be as well.

But those are just my two cents, and I'm young and more of an outside observer than an industry insider, so take my words with a grain of salt. I just really love L.A. and feel obliged to extoll that love.

@kb5, Thank you for your input :) It was very helpful, and hopefully for others too who are in a toss-up between schools/cities. I'm so glad that you love where you live, I definitely agree that you need to find a place that fits your vibe. I've been living in a place I hate for way too long, and would love to love the place I end up.

Ok... got rejected today from UCLA... So I have a question for the group since I doubt I can get this answered by the school...
The book "Film School Confidential" has the following sentence on page 225 under the heading "The Lowdown"... it says: For your application to be considered you have to have a bachelor's degree... Does anyone know if this firmly means that you have to have one completed when you submit your application or is it ok if you'll be finishing your degree before the beginning of school?

As long as your done with it by the time you enroll. If you get accepted they ask for a completed transcript. It's not uncommon to apply your senior year while still finishing.

Just for posterity, it seems people received acceptance emails from AFI yesterday.

Yeah, that's what I thought... but after reading this passage I started wondering if that's one of the ways UCLA narrows down their field of applicants...

I have officially accepted FSU's admission into their Film Production program! I truly believe that have exactly what I'm looking for.

Any others going to FSU, add me on Facebook! Is there a Facebook group started yet for the class beginning in 2015?

No I don't think so. I wouldn't get caught up in the whole process. Think about them only taking 18 people for directing. Even less like 3 for cinematography. They want half male half female usually. So that means not your down from 18 to 9 spots open to you. Then about half they want are international. So now it is about 4 spots open. In those 4 spots maybe they just think someone with a certain type of personality would fit based on the professors. So don't take it to heart. i applied as well and don't think i got it but don't let it get you down!

I'm not entirely sure, but I'll share my experiences on it. I'm an international student from Australia, and at the time I submitted my application, I had completed a 4-year dual Bachelor's degree. After I submitted my applications, I decided to seek clarification from UCLA and USC about their stance on Bachelor's degrees from international institutions. I was told that since I was from a university in the "British tradition", I would need to have completed an additional postgraduate year (or a one-year Master's) to be eligible for consideration at grad school. It seemed like a pretty draconian rule to me, and my heart sank when I was told this.

Sorry, I know this didn't answer your question at all! But I guess I'm trying to say that I can't be sure whether the whole "completion of degree" thing factors into their decision or not.

Just received an email from Columbia to check my application - wait listed.

I just got interview notification few days ago, and the interview will be held on Thursday.
I have also emailed them to ask about when will the result come out before I got interview notification, they said they will be sending out notifications within about two weeks.
By the way, I applied for editing program.

I applied for chapman's editing, too. But haven't heard from it yet. good luck with u!

Just got a phone call this morning from FSU: I got accepted in their Writing MFA (College of Motion Picture Arts).
Honestly wasn't expecting it, since they only accept 6 people and I didn't get into any of the Cali/NY schools.

:) bubbling with joy.

Congratulations to everyone who got accepted and/or accepted their admissions!

Just an update for me, my deadline to answer FSU was April 1st, so I had to think long and hard about whether to choose LMU or FSU. I finally chose to go for LMU, and declined my offer from FSU.
Yesterday (April 1st) I was accepted to Savannah College of Art and Design, with two $4000 scholarships per year for a 2 year course.

Typical haha, just as I had made my mind up about Los Angeles :p Well back to thinking some more about my options.
