How to Get Into AFI Conservatory: Exclusive Advice From the Admissions Office (Part 1)

Ask anyone about where to go to film school, and you’re bound to hear the American Film Institute Conservatory. First established in 1967, AFI is world renowned for producing pioneers and trailblazers in the film industry. In 2024, The Hollywood Reporter ranked AFI the no. 2 film program in the...

I have no formal experience on film sets as a PA or anything, only produced a few filmed plays and choreopoems from my time in theatre. Many experiences on theatres sets however in all capacities. My theatre background is extensive (in playwriting especially), so I see it as more as transferring to a sister industry within entertainment (theatre -> film), rather than an entire career change.

I work in advertising for a major grocery chain. My role is technically Art Director, but the company I’m with operates like a startup so I pretty regularly have to write the ads and produce them alongside the director and then help in post beyond handling PD & Art. I’ve also got a dozen or so shorts under my belt too with the last one playing at 30 or so medium tier Fests like Indy Shorts and Maryland Film Festival. I’ve had scripts place in some writing contests too and was a Screencraft Film Fund Semifinalist recently. I’d say I’m not looking for a career change so much as realignment towards my spouse and my goals. I do not want to make grocery content anymore haha.

I’ve not heard anything about an interview still so feeling like it’s probs a no for me. I have a complicated education history due to mental health and a death in the family so I knew it may be iffy because of that but hoped my ability to work in the industry after all that and quickly climb the ladder would help.

My spouse also applied for directing and hasn’t heard anything yet either but it seems like a lot of times those interview requests come later so 🤞🏼

I received an interview invitation from the producing program!
