NYU Tisch Graduate Film 2024 - Who's applying?

Was NYU the only school you applied at? That sounds like a risky gambit given the prestige of the University.
i know! I felt NYU was ideal as I'm currently based in the area (not to keen to move yet) and it was one of the only schools that outright highlighted that a film-making background was not required if I'm not mistaken (in the NY area at least). Will prob look into gaining more experience in the field and diversifying my applications if I end up applying next year!

I did some digging in the database, and it seems in 2019, and 2017 also, all interviews were sent out on 1 day. Have accepted that I didn’t get in this year, and am planning on developing my writing / samples for next year now.

Hi all,

Don’t know if any of this will be helpful. I’m a current first year at NYU.

Each cohort is comprised of 36 people. I can’t speak on the dates of interviews, if it helps, last year I received my notification on February 8.

If you get to the interview stage, it’s a big deal. Last year there were over 2,000 applicants for 36 spots.

Basically now they’re just trying to see if you would be a good fit for the program, personality wise, adaptability, etc. At this point, your work has already spoken for you, so it’s not just about your work.

Basically, the semi finalists are like 3 possibly combinations of cohorts. They interview everyone and decide who would be the best fit for the cohort overall, how everyone will mesh. My cohort is a mix of people who have industry experience and those who have never picked up a camera.

In your interview, it will be the chair, and two other faculty members. From what I’ve heard, one of the faculty members really wants you there, the other is skeptical, you won’t know who it is. But at least you know there’s someone there rooting for you.

Hope this helps and good luck, home to see you in the halls next semester.
hi Kemlay

thanks for sharing! could you also share with us the nyu scholarships and tips for paying tuitions?

fwiw just chiming in here that I got my interview request on February 2, so it appears notifications went out on the second and fifth.
are you based in the U.S. or international? people have been speculating that the first date is for international students and the second date is for domestic...

I got Feb 5 and I'm based in NYC

Hi all,
I had an email last night with who is interviewing me, and I'd love to know who everyone else has! I'm being interview by Jen Ruff, Gail Segal, and Barbara Schock (the former chair of the program).

Congrats bud! wow, so it appears that they are still sending out interview invites? This stuff really is wilder than a wildcard.

Thanks so much! This was an update email from Courtney, but I got my original interview notification on the 5th Feb :)

I just had my interview...I felt it went extremely well but we'll see... !!

Questions.
1. What are you proud of from your short film? What would you change/what are not proud of? How did you collaborate with your crew? What was a moment of tension with your crew and how did you resolve it?
2. What film do you wish you had made
3. What's your superpower? What are you bringing to set and to Tisch?
4. Why an MFA?
5. Is there someone you've met recently who was interesting to you?
6. Describe empathy in one cinematic image
7. What questions do you have for us
8. Tell us about working with the main actor in your film

Glad it went and thank you for posting! Who were your interviewers btw?

It was Kasi Lemmons, Julia, Ken Friedman. All of them extremely nice. I got such a good vibe from all of them
Ah amazing! Last year I had Ken, Julia, and Jen Ruff and all of them were so lovely! I'm curious to see if anyone else is being interviewed by Barbara Schock instead of Julia, or if it could be related to my admission last year. I guess we'll see!

had mine by Julia, Andrew and Carol.
1. describe my short what i did well and would have done better, how i worked with my crew
2. some specific question about my work
3. describe a moment free or regret
4. what would i tell to myself if i go back to my childhood
5. talked about my background
6. what i want to focus at nyu
7. any questions to them

not sure how it went tbh, i got interrupted several times... right from the beginning...

Congrats on the interviews everyone. :)

Don't forget to log your applications if you haven't yet.

I've just had my interview. I was so nervous but, being honest, I really don't think it went well. I guess I'll have to wait and see!

Why don’t you think it went well? What did they ask you?
So basically I just felt that the vibe was off and there wasn't much rapport (with the exception of one interviewer who was really lovely).

They asked me several questions and some were ok, but some really weren't and I felt like I was talking to a brick wall. They asked me what I could do differently in my film and I was trying to say because we didn't have any film equipment, I was using natural lighting only and I could've scheduled my film better so that there wasn't one scene that was shot at golden hour when it's meant to take place on one story day - but one interviewer cut me off and was like 'I'm not talking about equipment, I'm talking about story', so I never go the chance to explain what I meant. She also didn't specify she was asking about story only, either.

Later on, I was asked to describe what I saw outside my window and I gave a description of the buildings (that all the houses look the same, people hang flags up outside, you can tell there's a sense of community) and I was cut off by another interviewer who said: 'No, that's not what I meant. That's tone. You're a filmmaker now, so describe what you actually see. What are the houses made from?' I guess it was my fault for not realising the question was so literal, but the way in which I was cut off was very abrasive and belittling.

Overall it felt really disappointing and not at all like the interview I had last year. No one asked me about funding for NYU that I'd been asked last year either, and in general the awkward pauses really stressed me out. To me, it felt like I was being interviewed out of an obligation rather than actually wanting to interview me.

But yeah, it really didn't feel like the one I had last year and I'm not positive about it at all, which is a real shame!
